Ashen earned favorable PC reviews and a more mixed reception on Nintendo Switch, according to Metacritic’s platform-specific critic pages. The PC page shows an 81 Metascore from 22 reviews; the Switch page shows 71 from four. Reviewers broadly recognized its distinctive art, exploration, and companion-focused take on Souls-like action, while some found its ideas familiar or its cooperation uneven.
What critics think of Ashen
Ashen is an open-world co-op action RPG developed by A44 and published by Annapurna Interactive. Its combat uses stamina-based, Souls-like rhythms, but its identity also rests on exploring a strange world, traveling with companions, and helping a community grow. Annapurna describes it as “an open world co-op action RPG about a wanderer in search of a place to call home” (Annapurna Interactive).
The reception is positive overall on the PC critic page, but the Switch page is lower and draws on a much smaller set of reviews. Those are separate platform snapshots, not a single universal score or a measure of player opinion.

What reviewers praised
Art direction and world
Reviewers highlighted Ashen’s striking visual style and intriguing setting. IGN’s PC excerpt called out “a great art style, and an interesting world,” while GameSpot’s excerpt said the game does enough to distinguish itself from other Souls-like games. These are short excerpts reproduced by Metacritic, not full reviews; they are attributed to the outlets rather than to individual critics here.

Companionship and community
Ashen puts companionship where many games in the genre emphasize solitude. Its journey and community-building give players a reason to care about more than defeating the next enemy. That change in emphasis is a central part of what makes the game feel distinct, even though the core combat remains recognizable to Souls-like fans.
A more approachable pace
Nintendo Life’s Switch excerpt described the game as a “slightly more relaxed take on a Souls-like,” noting that it gets players into its gameplay rhythms quickly and does not linger. That suggests a less punishing presentation for some players, not that the game abandons stamina management or action-RPG challenge.

What critics found less successful
Familiar Souls-like foundations
The same formula that will appeal to genre fans may feel well-trodden to players who have already spent time with FromSoftware’s games and other Souls-likes. PC Gamer’s excerpt called Ashen’s approach not revolutionary, while still praising it as a strong execution of familiar ideas. The critical distinction is between refinement and reinvention: the game adds its own atmosphere and companionship angle without replacing the genre’s basic combat language.
Cooperation and AI can be uneven
Companions and co-op are part of the appeal, but reviewer observations include uneven AI or online cooperation. Players who expect a consistently reliable partner experience should treat the multiplayer and companion angle as an added dimension, not a guarantee that every encounter will feel better with assistance.

- Learn the ways of the Assassins and seek vengeance for the betrayal of your family
- Journey through 15th-century Renaissance Italy and become the most legendary leader of the Brotherhood, then embark on a final quest of discovery as you learn the truth about the Creed
- Includes enhanced features for the Nintendo Switch system, such as HD Rumble and more
Its appeal depends on enjoying the combat
For players who are not interested in stamina-based Souls-like action, the world and community systems may not be enough to carry the experience. Exploration and atmosphere complement the combat; they do not turn Ashen into a different genre.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Ashen worth playing?
Ashen is most compelling for players who like deliberate, stamina-conscious combat and want that structure paired with exploration, unusual art direction, and a more communal journey. Its review record supports a recommendation with that qualification: the PC critic snapshot is favorable, while the lower Switch result comes from a notably smaller pool of reviews.

Ashen on Nintendo Switch
Nintendo’s US listing identifies the Switch edition as a digital release, dated December 9, 2019, developed by A44 and published by Annapurna Interactive. It lists online play for one to two players and says the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is compatible; compatibility does not mean the controller is required. See the Nintendo Switch listing for the platform details.
The publisher’s game page lists versions for Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, GOG.com, and the Epic Games Store (Annapurna Interactive). Availability and current store terms can vary by region and platform.
What makes Ashen different from Dark Souls?
Ashen shares the genre’s stamina-based combat and deliberate action, so players familiar with Dark Souls will recognize its basic demands. Its clearest distinction is the emphasis on companionship and building a community rather than presenting the journey as purely solitary. The setting and art direction also give it a separate identity. It is better understood as a distinct Souls-like than as either a direct imitation or a radical departure.
Annapurna also credits fantasy author Mark Lawrence and band Foreign Fields as collaborators with the Aurora44 team on the game’s narrative and sound. That is background on the game’s creation, not evidence of a separately available physical book or soundtrack.
