Atari bought the Intellivision brand and rights to certain games in May 2024, but it did not buy the whole company or its Amico console business. The deal gives Atari control of a portfolio tied to the rivalry between the Atari 2600 and Mattel’s Intellivision—what Atari calls the “first console war.”

What did Atari buy from Intellivision?

On May 23, 2024, Atari announced that it had purchased the Intellivision brand and certain games from Intellivision Entertainment LLC. Atari’s announcement describes a purchase of brand and game rights, not the acquisition of the seller as a whole.

Atari’s current Intellivision page says its rights cover more than 200 titles in the portfolio. That is a count of titles covered by the rights, not a claim that more than 200 games were released for the original Intellivision console.

Did Atari buy the Amico?

No. The Amico console business was not part of the announced purchase. Intellivision Entertainment was to rebrand and continue developing and distributing the Amico, with Atari licensing it to distribute new versions of Intellivision games. The Amico FAQ provides the platform context; it is separate from the brand-and-games transaction.

Why is this being called the end of the first console war?

A rivalry that began with competing home consoles

Mattel Electronics released the original Intellivision home console in 1979 to compete with Atari’s 2600. The companies’ contest became a defining early console rivalry. Atari’s retrospective calls it the “first console war” and frames the 2024 deal as bringing Atari and Intellivision together after 45 years.

That “first” label is Atari’s historical framing, not a universally settled ranking among historians. Likewise, the 45-year figure is how Atari described the span of the rivalry, rather than an independently calculated measure of a formal conflict. Atari also notes that Mattel published games for Atari consoles under its M Network label, a reminder that the competition did not prevent every form of business overlap.

What Atari said about the deal

Mike Mika, Studio Head at Digital Eclipse, said on Atari’s Intellivision page: “Uniting Atari and Intellivision after 45 years ends the longest running console war in history,” Atari’s Intellivision page presents the quote as part of its account of the acquisition. The “longest running” claim is an attributed company statement, not a measured or universally accepted historical finding.

What does the deal mean for Intellivision games?

Atari said it planned to pursue digital and physical distribution for certain legacy games, potentially create new games, and explore licensing and other brand opportunities. These were announced intentions, not a promise that every proposed game or release would happen.

  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

Atari’s announcement estimates that the Intellivision platform sold 5 million units through 1990. That is Atari’s estimate for the period through 1990, not a current lifetime sales total. The acquisition may give Atari options to make selected games and the brand available again, but the announced plans do not establish the release schedule or availability of particular titles.
