Start with the crash pattern
Before changing settings, note what you see and when it happens. Does Apex close during startup, freeze in a match, show an error code, or cause a wider Windows failure? Does the same problem occur in other games? These details help distinguish an Apex file or launch issue from a driver or system-wide problem.
- Error code or report: Copy the exact text, including any file name such as
Apex_crash.txtorr5apex.exe. - Timing: Record whether the crash happens at launch, in the lobby, during a match, or after an update.
- Scope: Check whether other games or Windows itself are also freezing or crashing.
- Hardware: Note your GPU and driver version, particularly if you use AMD hardware.
Try the first checks
- Check EA’s service-status guidance and its Apex error-code guide for a reported issue. If EA’s service is affected, you may need to wait for it to be resolved.
- Close Apex and restart your PC. EA recommends restarting the game and system as an initial step.
- Check that Apex is up to date, then launch it again. If the crash continues, follow the guidance for the specific error or report rather than repeating general restarts.
Match the fix to the message
Apex_crash.txt
EA directs players who receive an Apex_crash.txt report to its crash and freezing guidance and recommends repairing the game files. Use the file-repair option in the launcher where Apex is installed; the exact menu wording can vary by launcher.
r5apex.exe
EA says an r5apex.exe error may indicate an inconsistent game installation. Repair the Apex game files and update Windows, then check whether the error remains.

Error 23
EA identifies outdated graphics drivers and missing or damaged game files as possible causes of error 23. Check for an appropriate graphics-driver update and repair Apex’s files. These are possible causes, not proof that every error 23 crash has the same origin.
DXGI_ERROR_, DEVICE_HUNG
EA associates this message with a background application that has become stuck and recommends fully restarting the system. If the error returns, investigate background apps that are active when Apex crashes; avoid assuming that any one app is responsible without evidence.

Anti-cheat or integrity error
For anti-cheat integrity or launch errors, EA’s error-code guidance includes repairing game files; if the issue persists, a fix may need to come from EA. Apex on PC switched to EA Javelin AntiCheat effective September 29, 2026, according to EA’s support index. That change is context, not evidence that the transition is a general cause of crashes.
If you use an AMD graphics card
EA’s September 3, 2026 update said a new AMD patch would fully resolve the AMD-hardware crashes addressed in that update, and linked to AMD’s 26.9.1 release notes. Check AMD’s current driver information if your hardware and symptoms match that specific issue. The update does not establish that this driver fixes unrelated Apex crashes.

When Apex still crashes
If the error-specific steps do not resolve it, use EA’s PC technical troubleshooting index to choose the next diagnostic path. It links to resources for DirectX, VC++ and DLL issues, graphics problems, DxDiag, and clean or safe boot troubleshooting. Pick the route that fits the evidence: a graphics-related message, missing-library error, or crash that affects more than Apex calls for different investigation.
Prefer reversible, symptom-matched actions before broad system changes. The error code and symptoms do not identify the specific cause on an individual PC, and the official guidance does not establish that buying hardware or running a third-party PC repair utility is generally necessary.
