Are You Allowed to Use Items in a Nuzlocke?

Items are allowed in a regular Nuzlocke unless you choose a restriction. Here’s how common Hardcore rules distinguish battle items, held items, Poké Balls, and healing outside battle.

Yes. A regular Nuzlocke does not automatically ban items; “no items in battle” is a popular Hardcore restriction, not a rule every Nuzlocke must follow. The answer depends on the rules you set for your run, especially whether you mean Bag items, held items, Poké Balls, or healing between battles.

What are the basic Nuzlocke rules?

A Nuzlocke is a fan-made, self-imposed challenge, not an official Pokémon game mode. The two basic conventions are to catch only the first eligible Pokémon encountered in each area and to treat a Pokémon that faints as dead, releasing it or permanently boxing it. Bulbapedia identifies battle-item bans as optional difficulty rules, while the Nuzlocke Wiki describes no items in battle as an optional restriction associated with the Hardcore format.

Because players choose their own clauses, there is no single universal answer beyond the rules you adopt. Decide your item rules before starting and stick to them, rather than changing them to get through a difficult fight.

What counts as “using items”?

Specify what your rule covers. “No items” can mean different things to different players, and a rule about selecting an item from the Bag during battle does not necessarily govern held items or healing between fights.

Item or situation Common Nuzlocke treatment
Bag items during battle, such as Potions, status cures, and X-items Allowed by the basic rules; commonly prohibited in a Hardcore Nuzlocke. Some players ban only healing items, so state whether X-items are included. Bulbapedia’s Nuzlocke Challenge overview describes both a broad no-items option and a narrower no-healing-items option.
Held items Usually allowed under Nuzlocke University’s common Hardcore formulation, though players can choose a stricter ban. Nuzlocke University’s Hardcore Nuzlocke Variant guide permits them.
Poké Balls Usually exempt from the Hardcore Bag-item ban in that same formulation. Clarify the exception if your rule uses the broad phrase “no items.”
Healing between battles Not automatically banned by a rule against using Bag items during battle. Healing outside battle and Pokémon Center access are separate choices.
Revives Usually incompatible with the core rule that a fainted Pokémon is dead. A run may allow a limited revival as an explicit variation.

How does the Hardcore item rule work?

Hardcore Nuzlockes commonly prohibit using Bag items during battle, while allowing held items and Poké Balls. Nuzlocke University’s guide describes the format as a more difficult variant intended to encourage strategic play by limiting tactics such as over-levelling and relying on healing items in battle. Its rules also include a level cap; Set mode is generally accepted but is not one of the two main rules it identifies.

Other players use different versions. Some prohibit only healing items, while others ban all Bag items or held items too. If you are playing with a group or following a particular challenge format, use that ruleset’s exact wording rather than assuming every Hardcore run draws the line identically.

Does a battle item ban stop you healing between fights?

No, not by itself. A rule against using Bag items during battle does not automatically prohibit Potions between battles or determine whether you can use Pokémon Centers. Those are separate optional clauses. You might allow all out-of-battle healing, limit healing items, restrict Center visits, or leave Centers unrestricted while banning battle items.

Likewise, decide how your run treats revival. Under the standard permadeath convention, a fainted Pokémon cannot be brought back with a Revive or a revival move. If you want to allow a limited second chance, write that exception into your rules before the run begins.

How to make your item rules clear

  1. Choose your battle rule. Decide whether Bag items are all allowed, all banned, or restricted only for healing. State whether X-items count.
  2. Set separate rules for equipment and catching. Say whether held items are allowed and whether Poké Balls are exempt from a Bag-item ban.
  3. Decide how recovery works between battles. Specify whether healing items and Pokémon Centers are allowed, limited, or banned.
  4. Define the fainting rule. Say whether revival items or moves are forbidden or whether your run permits a clearly limited exception.
  5. Record the rules before starting. A short written list prevents disputes and makes it easier to follow the same standard throughout the run.

A simple, commonly used Hardcore version is: no Bag items during battle except Poké Balls; held items are allowed; out-of-battle healing and Pokémon Center use follow separately stated rules; fainted Pokémon are permanently lost. Adjust that template if you want a different challenge, but make the boundaries explicit.
