Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? is a franchise, not one interchangeable game. The 2007 Hasbro board game is the better fit for a screen-free family trivia night; the 2022 licensed digital quiz game is built for automated questions and couch co-op across supported platforms. The older Make the Grade game is a separate release. These assessments are based on product listings and review snapshots, not hands-on testing.
Which Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? game are you looking at?
The title can refer to several products. The US television show premiered on FOX in 2007, with Jeff Foxworthy hosting the version described in Hasbro’s 2011 newsroom release. Hasbro said that 309 half-hour episodes had been acquired by The Hub. That history helps explain the game-show format, but it does not make the games the same product.
- 2007 Hasbro board game: a physical trivia game with question cards and game pieces.
- 2008 Make the Grade: an older video game with a different title and platform history.
- 2022 licensed quiz game: a newer digital release with voiced questions, minigames and local multiplayer.
The practical choice is usually between the board game and the 2022 digital game. The older console and PC release is relevant mainly if you are researching the franchise’s gaming history.
How do the board game and 2022 digital game compare?
| Product | Format and group size | Question content | What the listings establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hasbro board game (2007) | Tabletop; 2–4 players | 300 question cards | Physical boards, markers, pawns, tokens, pencils and a card-reader sleeve; suggested age 8+ (BoardGameGeek product record) |
| Licensed digital quiz game (2022) | Couch co-op; listing says 1–8 players | More than 6,800 English-voiced questions, according to the publisher listing | Digital quiz challenges and minigames; listed on Steam, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch stores (Steam, PlayStation Store, Nintendo US store) |
The numbers describe different things: 300 is the board game’s card count, while the digital game’s publisher advertises a question bank of more than 6,800. They are not directly comparable measures of how much play you will get, since the listings do not establish how often questions repeat or how the two formats pace a session.

Is the 2007 board game worth considering?
Consider it if your group wants a screen-free trivia session and is comfortable with a small table game rather than automated presentation. BoardGameGeek’s record lists 2–4 players, a suggested age of 8+, and 300 question cards. Its reproduced Hasbro description includes “cheat” and “save” mechanics, which echo the show’s use of classmates and chances to avoid a wrong answer.
The main practical risk is buying an older copy secondhand. Check that the cards and components are present and in usable condition; the listing’s contents include two boards, markers, pawns, tokens, pencils and a card-reader sleeve as well as the cards. BoardGameGeek also shows community ratings and comments, but those user-submitted figures are time-sensitive and should not be read as a representative survey.

How good is the 2022 digital game?
The 2022 release is the more convenient option when you want the game to present questions and keep a larger group moving. Steam identifies Massive Miniteam as developer and HandyGames and THQ Nordic Mobile as publishers, and gives an August 23, 2022 release date. Its listing advertises more than 6,800 fully English-voiced questions and couch co-op for 1–8 players.
The PlayStation Store lists PS4 and PS5 versions, offline play, and 1–8 players. Its description mentions multiple-choice and true-or-false challenges, minigames, 24 subjects and more than 6,800 questions. Nintendo’s US store lists a Switch edition and an Extra Credit add-on. These listings confirm platform presence, but do not establish that every version has identical features or that a particular edition is currently available in every region.

A folding stand for your phone or tablet is in the box. There is nothing extra to buy to start playing, and every future app update is included at no cost, so the game keeps getting better over time.

That is why the Outsmarted community keeps growing.
Store ratings are mixed and should be treated as snapshots, not permanent verdicts. Steam showed 63% positive from 149 reviews in a snapshot observed October 7, 2026. The PlayStation Store showed 3.46 out of 5 from 197 ratings on the same date. These scores come from different storefronts, user populations and rating systems, so they are not directly comparable.
The PlayStation page also displayed one user’s complaint that a measurement answer was marked wrong. That is an individual report, not an independently verified defect or evidence that the game routinely scores answers incorrectly.

Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader: Make the Grade is a separate, older video game. GameSpot’s listing records its first release as October 15, 2008, with versions for PC, PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360 and Wii, THQ as publisher, and a 7.5 review score. Those historical platform listings do not establish current compatibility, resale availability or whether the game can be played on modern hardware.
Quick Recap
Which version should you choose?
- Choose the board game for a physical, screen-free group activity, especially if a 2–4-player format suits your table.
- Choose the 2022 digital game if you want voiced question presentation, minigames and the listed 1–8-player couch co-op format. Confirm the edition and regional store listing before buying.
- Look at Make the Grade if you specifically want the 2008 game, but check platform compatibility and the condition of any used copy before relying on an old listing.
