At Dead of Night is a story-led horror game about Maya, a student trapped in a remote hotel with its dangerous landlord, Jimmy Hall. While trying to avoid him and rescue her friends, Maya uses a ghost voice receiver to question spirits linked to Jimmy’s past. The game mixes live-action footage with graphics, pursuit and ghost investigation.
What is At Dead of Night about?
Maya and her student friends check into an old hotel on a remote headland. The landlord, Jimmy Hall, invites them to watch a late-night comedy show. Maya turns him down, and, according to developer Baggy Cat, Jimmy’s rage releases Hugo Punch, his comedy alter ego, who takes control.
The danger soon becomes immediate: Jimmy has tied up Maya’s friends and locked them in their rooms. Maya has escaped, but he is hunting her through the hotel. She has to stay out of his reach while looking for a way to free the others and uncover the secret that may make him release them. Steam’s official game listing describes this setup.
Who is Jimmy Hall?
Jimmy is the hotel’s landlord and the game’s central human threat. The developer’s synopsis connects his rage with Hugo Punch taking control; Steam describes Jimmy as a psychopath. Those descriptions establish his role as an antagonist, but they do not provide a full clinical history or explain all the mechanics behind Hugo Punch.

It is safest to distinguish that official premise from interpretations of Jimmy’s past or the story’s supernatural elements. The official descriptions establish that spirits are connected to his history, but do not settle every detail of his backstory or the ending. Fan theories about his family, diagnosis or what precisely happens should not be treated as confirmed canon on that basis.
What do the ghosts do?
Maya finds an ancient ghost voice receiver that lets her communicate with spirits from Jimmy’s past. Their accounts gradually reveal stories and clues tied to his secret. The ghosts are therefore part of the investigation, not just a source of atmosphere: questioning them helps Maya piece together what happened while Jimmy remains a physical danger in the hotel.

What kind of horror game is it?
Steam calls it “part horror film, part horror game and part ghost hunt.” Its presentation combines live-action footage and graphics, while its play alternates between investigating through the receiver and avoiding Jimmy. That blend makes it more precise to describe as a story-led horror and ghost-investigation game with a pursuit threat than to reduce it to a conventional point-and-click adventure.
Where can you play it?
Steam lists At Dead of Night as a Windows game, released on 19 November 2020, with Baggy Cat Ltd. listed as developer and publisher. The listing includes single-player, captions and subtitle support in multiple languages. It also notes Steam Deck support and a version updated for 2024 under Beta options; check the current listing for availability and compatibility details.
