Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain is a Nintendo Switch puzzle and party game best suited to short, friendly challenges—especially with family or friends on one console. Its standout feature is that each player can choose a difficulty, helping children and adults compete together. Reviews are generally favorable to mixed: critics praise its charm and couch multiplayer, while some find the activity selection too limited for lasting solo play.

What kind of game is Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain?

It is a collection of quick mental challenges rather than a long-form puzzle adventure. Nintendo’s examples include remembering numbers, identifying an animal as it comes into focus, and guiding a train to its destination. The game has solo practice and a brain test, alongside multiplayer modes. Nintendo does not present it as a clinical or scientifically validated brain-training program, and the cited product information makes no claim that it improves intelligence, memory, or school performance. Metacritic lists a 73 Metascore from 68 critic reviews and a user score of 7.8 from 46 ratings. Its critic classifications are 47% positive (32 reviews), 53% mixed (36), and 0% negative (0); it labels critic reception “Mixed or Average” and user reception “Generally Favorable.” These are dynamic review-site aggregates, accessed in 2026, not scientific assessments or gameplay studies. What reviewers criticize

Some critics point to a slim mini-game catalogue, recycled ideas, limited motivation to keep playing over the long term, or control friction. My Nintendo News’s December 3, 2021 review suggested that households able to play face-to-face may get more value than solo players. These are individual opinions, but together they explain why the game’s social appeal is clearer than its replay depth.

Is it good for families and mixed ages?

Its most useful family feature is individual difficulty selection: players can set their own level, so a child and an adult need not tackle the same challenge at the same difficulty. Nintendo describes the game as letting everyone play together at varying difficulties. The local format and short activities make it easy to hand over a turn or start a brief session, though a player seeking a large, steadily expanding set of puzzles may find the variety modest. How multiplayer works

Local play on one console

Nintendo lists single-system play for one to four players. Multiplayer requires one compatible controller per player; additional controllers may be sold separately. Local modes do not require an online subscription, making this the clearest option for face-to-face family play.

Ghost Clash and online features

Ghost Clash is asynchronous: it compares your performance with recorded performance data rather than putting everyone into a simultaneous live match. Nintendo describes possible opponents as worldwide players, friends, and other profiles on the same console. Online play and Ghost Clash require internet access, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online membership, subject to regional availability. Nintendo’s US product page

Platforms, editions, and age ratings

The game was released for Nintendo Switch on December 3, 2021. Nintendo lists both a game-card edition and a download edition; Nintendo UK also lists a demo. Ratings differ by region: Nintendo UK lists PEGI 3, while Nintendo’s US listing gives ESRB Mild Cartoon Violence and In-Game Purchases. Check the relevant regional listing for current edition availability; current price and physical stock are not established here.

Nintendo’s US listing says the game is supported on Nintendo Switch 2 with behavior consistent with Nintendo Switch, and that a free update adds GameShare support. A Nintendo Switch 2 system is required to initiate GameShare. Online GameShare through GameChat requires internet, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online membership, and is not available in all countries. Switch 2 is not required to play the original game. Nintendo US

Who should play it?

  • Good fit: families or friends looking for short, approachable challenges on one console, particularly when players have different ages or experience levels.
  • Consider carefully: solo players who want a deep catalogue or a strong long-term progression loop; reviewers’ main reservations concern limited variety and motivation.
  • Not the right expectation: anyone shopping for a proven cognitive-training or educational intervention. The available product information describes entertainment, not measured cognitive outcomes.

Verdict

Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain is easiest to recommend as a casual family party game, not as an expansive solo puzzle experience. Its adjustable difficulty and four-player local play answer a practical household problem—how to let players of different ability levels join in—while its modest activity variety helps explain the mixed-to-positive reviews. If couch play matters more than depth, it is a sensible fit; if you mainly want a substantial solo game, the criticisms deserve weight.
