Baldur’s Gate 3 Co-op Keeps Disconnecting? Troubleshoot Your Existing Save

Work through Baldur’s Gate 3 co-op disconnects methodically: back up the campaign, isolate host and network variables, check mods and files, and confirm cross-play setup if relevant.

If Baldur’s Gate 3 keeps disconnecting during co-op, protect the campaign first, then test one variable at a time: host and player pairing, network, background software, game files, mods, and—if you use it—cross-play setup. These checks can help identify whether the problem follows a player, host, network, or save, but a disconnect alone does not prove a specific cause.

Back up the existing campaign before testing

For a controlled test, the host can provide the latest save so the group can see whether the same problem occurs with that campaign. Make a backup before moving, replacing, or restoring any save files. On Windows PC, Baldur’s Gate 3 Story saves are in:

%LocalAppData%Larian StudiosBaldur's Gate 3PlayerProfilesPublicSavegamesStory

Each save is a folder. Save locations differ on other platforms, so do not use this Windows path as a platform-independent location. Larian’s guidance on retrieving requested files explains where PC saves are stored.

Pinpoint when and for whom the disconnect happens

Note whether the affected player drops from the lobby, during loading, or only after entering the campaign. Also record whether it affects one player or the whole group. Change one thing at a time and keep track of the result; changing host, network, mods, and save together makes it harder to tell what mattered.

  • Try a different host and player pairing. Larian Studios Support explicitly asks, “Have you tried switching who is hosting?” If the symptom changes with a different host or pairing, that is useful evidence about where to continue testing, not proof of a cause. See Larian’s multiplayer troubleshooting guidance.
  • Compare the affected campaign with a new game. If practical, test a new game as well as the backed-up existing save. Note whether the issue occurs in both; that distinction helps isolate campaign-specific behavior.
  • Test players in pairs. If the group has several players, compare different pairs and note exactly who disconnects. This can show whether the symptom follows a player or a particular pairing.

Test the connection and background software

Larian recommends checking the connection path and closing nonessential programs. These are diagnostic steps, not guarantees of a fix.

  1. Switch between Wi-Fi and wired Ethernet, if available. Test the same session again after changing only the connection type. A cable is useful for this test only if the device has an Ethernet port or a compatible adapter; it is not a guaranteed solution.
  2. Try another network. Where practical, test a different connection, such as a phone hotspot. A change in results can help distinguish a network-specific issue from one that remains across connections.
  3. Close nonessential programs. Larian calls out possible conflicts from firewalls, antivirus software, overlays, monitoring tools, and chat programs. Close what is safe to close for a test, then restore normal security settings afterward. Avoid permanently disabling security protections.
  4. Retry at another time if conditions may vary. Larian suggests considering bandwidth or ISP conditions. A later successful session is a clue, not confirmation of the underlying cause.

Larian lists invitation, online lobby, Direct Connection, and LAN methods for relevant platform combinations. Use an available supported joining method as a comparison test. LAN over separate networks requires a VPN, according to Larian; it is not an ordinary internet matchmaking substitute. See Multiplayer Issues for the applicable options.

Verify game files and isolate mods

Use your platform’s game-file verification feature—Larian specifically points to Steam or GOG Galaxy—then test again. If the session uses mods, test without them where possible to check whether the modified setup is involved. Change only the file or mod variable you are testing, and preserve the campaign backup before experimenting.

For a modded multiplayer session, all participants need matching mod versions. Larian Studios Support says: “Whether you’re loading a modded savegame or planning on playing Multiplayer with your mods enabled, you’ll need the same version of mods installed.” Its mod synchronization guide describes the verification window’s options for downloading, enabling, updating, or downgrading mods. For cross-play, Larian also recommends testing without mods if connection problems continue.

Use the cross-play setup only if your group needs it

Cross-play has a separate setup and invitation flow. Larian’s current instructions require players to enable Allow Cross-Play, link the game to a Larian account, and use the Cross-Play lobby and Larian account friends list to invite one another. For a campaign already in progress, load its save, enable Cross-Play for that save, and invite the friend from Multiplayer. Follow Larian’s Cross-play: Hosting or Joining a Game instructions for the current flow; do not assume the standard lobby invitation path is equivalent.

Understand what Cross-Save can—and cannot—recover

Larian Account Cross-Save syncs a copy of the last 10 saves and retains those server copies for up to six months. The copies are separate from saves stored locally on a device, so do not treat Cross-Save as permanent archival storage. Larian’s Larian Account Information page says account copies can be downloaded from My Saves. An account notice stated that inactive cross-saves older than six months would expire on 2026-09-29; that date has passed. Check whether the save you need is still available, and keep local or other platform backups.
