Linux has free games for almost every mood, from lightweight puzzle games and deep strategy campaigns to fast arena shooters and commercial free-to-play titles. The key is to distinguish games with native Linux builds from Windows games that may run through Proton, and to distinguish genuinely free or open-source games from titles that are free to start but sell optional items or progression.

This guide groups 42 recommendations by genre, flags where free-to-play or compatibility caveats matter, and explains how to choose a safe installation route. Native Linux support is not the same as Steam Deck verification, and online play depends on servers and, sometimes, accounts.

What “free Linux game” means

“Free” describes several different arrangements. Check the label before installing so you know whether the game is open source, needs an account, or may require a compatibility layer.

  • Free and open source (FOSS): No purchase is required and the source code is available. Many community-made games in this list fit this category.
  • Freeware: No charge to play, but the game’s code may remain proprietary.
  • Free-to-play: There is no upfront game price, but optional purchases, premium currency, battle passes, accounts, or online services may be part of the experience.
  • Free engine or client: The software may be free while the original game data is not. ScummVM and Arx Libertatis are tools for running games, not standalone games in their own right.
  • Proton-compatible: A Windows game may run on Linux through Proton, but that does not make it a native Linux release or guarantee that every feature works.

42 free Linux games, grouped by what you want to play

The list is organized by genre, not ranked from best to worst. “Native” means a Linux build or Linux distribution route; it does not promise that every release channel has the same version. Availability, project maintenance, servers, and compatibility can change, so use the official project or store page when choosing a download.

Shooters and action

  1. Xonotic — A fast, free and open-source arena shooter for players who enjoy Quake-style movement and deathmatch. It has Linux binaries in its downloadable archive and a Flatpak option. After extracting the official archive, the project documents launching with ./xonotic-linux-sdl.sh or ./xonotic-linux-glx.sh; which works best depends on your hardware and graphics stack. Xonotic’s FAQ explains the Linux options.
  2. OpenArena — A lightweight, classic arena FPS that suits older systems and straightforward deathmatch sessions.
  3. Red Eclipse 2 — An arena shooter built around acrobatic movement and parkour-like traversal.
  4. Unvanquished — A humans-versus-aliens shooter that blends direct combat with strategic team play.
  5. AssaultCube — A compact tactical FPS worth considering when you want a lighter shooter rather than a visually demanding one.
  6. Warsow — A movement-focused arena shooter for players who value speed and momentum.
  7. OpenSpades — Voxel-based combat where players can dig and build as well as shoot.
  8. Teeworlds — A small 2D multiplayer action game whose grappling-hook movement gives matches their distinctive feel.
  9. Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory / ET: Legacy — A team-based WWII FPS. Check which current client and servers are available before setting aside time for online play.
  10. Brawlhalla — A commercial free-to-play platform fighter, not an open-source game. It is an option for online competitive play, but check current Linux availability and compatibility through its store listing before installing.
  11. War Thunder — A commercial free-to-play combat game with extensive progression and monetization. Choose it for its large-scale vehicle combat, not for a purchase-free, open-source experience.
  12. Team Fortress 2 — A free-to-play class-based shooter distributed through Steam. Check its current Linux or Proton status and anti-cheat behavior, as those details can change.

Strategy, simulation, and management

  1. 0 A.D. — A historical real-time strategy game centered on building a base and commanding armies.
  2. Beyond All Reason — A large-scale robot RTS. Its official launcher and current build are the place to check for the intended installation route.
  3. Warzone 2100 — A free and open-source 3D RTS with a single-player campaign, AI skirmishes, online multiplayer for up to 10 players, customizable units, and a technology tree of more than 400 technologies. Its project also lists OpenGL, OpenGL ES, and Vulkan support. Use a stable release for ordinary play rather than assuming a development build is equivalent. The Warzone 2100 project repository documents releases and installation notes.
  4. OpenRA — An open-source engine and mod platform for Command & Conquer-style RTS games. The engine is not a blanket replacement for original commercial game assets; check the specific mod’s requirements.
  5. Freeciv — A free, Civilization-inspired turn-based game about growing an empire over many turns.
  6. The Battle for Wesnoth — Turn-based tactical battles with campaigns and a broad ecosystem of additional content.
  7. OpenTTD — A transport-management game spanning road, rail, air, and shipping networks.
  8. Simutrans — A detailed transport and logistics simulation. It is a good fit if you enjoy systems and planning; newcomers may find it less immediately accessible than OpenTTD.
  9. Widelands — Settlement-building strategy focused on developing production chains.
  10. Unknown Horizons — City-building, trade, and colony management for players who prefer economic development to direct combat.
  11. Luanti (formerly Minetest) — A sandbox construction and modding platform. The project’s name has changed, so look for its current official branding and distribution rather than relying only on older references to Minetest.
  12. Zero-K — A large-scale RTS with AI, cooperative, and competitive play. Check its current Steam or official Linux distribution route before installing.

RPGs, adventures, and roguelikes

  1. Endless Sky — An open-ended 2D space game built around trading, combat, and choosing your own direction.
  2. Naev — A space RPG with factions, missions, and piloting, for players who want more story and progression than a pure sandbox.
  3. Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead — A deep survival roguelike with a steep learning curve. Its complexity is part of the appeal, but it is not the easiest first game for someone seeking a simple interface.
  4. Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup — A traditional turn-based dungeon roguelike, available in native clients and as web tiles.
  5. Flare — An open-source isometric action RPG with combat and loot.
  6. Veloren — A voxel RPG with exploration, crafting, and multiplayer. Prefer the project’s official launcher over an unverified mirror.
  7. Arx Libertatis — A free, open-source engine/reimplementation for playing Arx Fatalis on Linux. It may require original game data, so the engine alone should not be mistaken for a complete free game.
  8. Beneath a Steel Sky — A classic point-and-click adventure that can be played through ScummVM. Confirm that the game files come from a legitimate distribution.
  9. Flight of the Amazon Queen — Another classic point-and-click adventure playable through ScummVM; use a legitimate source for its game data.
  10. Dink Smallwood HD — A free action-adventure RPG with user-created content. Check that the Linux build and its distribution terms are current at the official source.

Racing, sports, platformers, and puzzles

  1. SuperTuxKart — A polished open-source kart racer and a strong first pick for local play or casual racing.
  2. SuperTux — A 2D platformer starring Tux. Its Steam listing identifies it as free and supports SteamOS/Linux, but also marks it Early Access and says the story mode is only partly complete. The listing states minimum memory and storage of 250 MB and x86_64/amd64 Linux support; those are store-page requirements, not a guarantee of performance on every machine. Check the current SuperTux Steam listing for its status and requirements.
  3. Secret Maryo Chronicles — A Mario-inspired platformer. Confirm the source and maintenance status of the build before downloading.
  4. Frogatto & Friends — A colorful single-player platformer; check the project’s current official distribution route.
  5. Neverball — A physics-based precision puzzle game in which careful movement matters more than reflex-heavy combat.
  6. Frozen Bubble — A lightweight bubble-matching puzzle game suitable for short sessions.
  7. Pingus — A Lemmings-style puzzle game built around guiding characters through hazards.
  8. Armagetron Advanced — A light-cycle arcade game with multiplayer play; check whether an online community or server is available if multiplayer is your main reason to install it.

More free games worth checking

These additional titles are strong candidates when their current official distribution suits your setup. They are included rather than forcing every recommendation into a fixed count when Linux builds, servers, or distribution details can vary.

  • Hedgewars — Turn-based artillery battles with a playful presentation.
  • Extreme Tux Racer — Lightweight downhill racing.
  • StepMania — A rhythm-game engine for dance-pad or keyboard play; check which current packages and song content are available.
  • Open Hexagon — An arcade challenge game for short, demanding sessions.
  • Stunt Rally — Rally racing with a focus on driving challenges.
  • The Dark Mod — A stealth game with a dedicated installation and asset setup; follow the project’s official instructions.

Which games suit older PCs?

For modest hardware, start with games that are typically lightweight or primarily 2D. This is a shortlist, not a performance guarantee: drivers, resolution, graphics settings, and the exact release can still matter.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
  • Often good first installs: Frozen Bubble, Pingus, Neverball, Teeworlds, OpenTTD, Freeciv, The Battle for Wesnoth, Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, and SuperTux.
  • Lightweight shooters to try: AssaultCube and OpenArena. Xonotic may also suit older systems with reduced settings, but its performance depends more on graphics hardware.
  • For racing: Extreme Tux Racer is a lightweight option to investigate; check the requirements for the build you install.

Distribution repositories are often a convenient way to install these games on older machines, but a package can lag behind the latest upstream release.

Native Linux games versus Proton

A native Linux game has a Linux build or is distributed in a Linux-compatible package. This is usually the simpler choice when you want predictable installation and fewer compatibility variables.

Steam’s Linux/SteamOS support information distinguishes games with official Linux support from Windows games that may work through Steam Play and Proton. Proton can make many Windows games playable, but launching successfully does not prove that multiplayer, anti-cheat, launchers, video playback, controllers, or every update will work. Compatibility may change with a game update, Proton version, or graphics driver. Valve’s Steam Play guidance explains the distinction. Community compatibility reports on ProtonDB can help with troubleshooting, but they are not an official guarantee.

For a non-Steam Windows game, Lutris can manage games and Wine-based runners, but it may require more setup than installing a native package or using Steam. See the Lutris download page and its free-to-play game directory. Native support remains the safer starting point if you want to avoid launcher or anti-cheat surprises.

Where to install Linux games

  • Distribution repositories: A good default for integrated updates and dependencies. Package availability varies, and a distribution’s version may be older than the upstream release.
  • Flathub: Useful when a game is missing or outdated in your distribution’s repository. Flatpak packages can be more consistent across distributions, but may use more disk space or need permission to access particular files or devices.
  • Steam: Convenient for commercial free-to-play games, accounts, automatic updates, achievements, multiplayer, Steam Input, and Proton. You need a Steam account for Steam’s ecosystem.
  • Official project pages: Often the best source for a project’s intended launcher, AppImage, archive, or current release.
  • itch.io: A useful place to find smaller indie and experimental games; check each listing’s platform, license, and download source.
  • GitHub or GitLab: Useful for official releases and source code. Make sure you are on the project’s real repository rather than a random fork, and distinguish stable releases from development builds.

For software distributed through Flatpak or an AppImage, use the project’s official instructions or the trusted store listing. A common AppImage launch pattern is chmod +x Game.AppImage followed by ./Game.AppImage, but download the file only from the official project or a trusted release page and check that it matches your system architecture.

Install from your Linux distribution

Package names differ, so do not assume a command below works for every game. Find the exact package name in your distribution’s software center, repository search, or the project’s official installation instructions before running it.

Ubuntu or Debian

sudo apt update
sudo apt install <package-name>

Fedora

sudo dnf install <package-name>

Arch-based distributions

sudo pacman -S <package-name>

Flatpak

flatpak install flathub <application-id>

Obtain the exact Flatpak application ID from Flathub or the project’s official page. If a Flatpak cannot see a save folder or controller, review its permissions using your desktop’s Flatpak permission settings or the package’s documentation rather than granting broad access without understanding it.

Accounts, multiplayer, and offline play

Native, open-source games are often the easiest place to start if you want to avoid accounts and play offline, but online features vary by game. A free-to-play price does not mean account-free, offline, or independent of a publisher’s servers.

  • Check the mode you care about: Local multiplayer, LAN play, matchmaking, dedicated servers, and single-player are different features. Do not infer one from a generic “multiplayer” label.
  • Expect server changes: Community servers can be quiet, disappear, or stop matching a client version. Before installing an older multiplayer game, look for current server or project information.
  • Account and anti-cheat checks matter: Commercial free-to-play games may require accounts, launchers, or anti-cheat systems that do not work reliably through Proton.
  • For connection failures: Check that your client and server versions match, then review the game’s firewall, NAT, and IPv6 guidance. Do not assume a Linux installation failure when the problem is an unavailable server or network path.

Controllers and Steam Deck

A Linux build alone does not establish that a game has good controller support or is verified for Steam Deck. Kart racers and many platformers are natural controller candidates; strategy games, roguelikes, and precision shooters often work best with keyboard and mouse. Steam Input may help with some Steam games, while non-Steam titles can need manual mapping. On a Deck, check text size, launcher behavior, control layout, and current game compatibility before relying on a specific title for portable play.

Download safely and choose the right build

  • Prefer your distribution’s official repository, Flathub, Steam, a reputable store, or the game’s official project page.
  • Avoid unofficial repacks and random download mirrors, especially for old games whose original sites or links may have changed.
  • Check whether a download is a stable release, a development build, an engine that needs separate game data, or an early-access game.
  • If a game will not launch, confirm that you chose the correct Linux build and architecture, then check the project’s current installation notes. For Proton games, verify the title’s current compatibility and anti-cheat status rather than assuming a previous workaround still applies.
