Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If your Steam Deck’s built-in speakers are silent, first check where the sound is going: Bluetooth headphones, a 3.5-mm headset, a USB-C accessory, or a docked display may still be selected. Work through these six checks in order, from simple output changes to deciding whether the problem needs Steam Support or repair.
1. Disconnect other audio devices and select the speakers
Valve’s first troubleshooting step is to remove other possible outputs, then switch the Deck back to its built-in speakers. A Bluetooth device can remain selected even when you are not wearing or hearing it.
- Turn off or disconnect Bluetooth headphones and speakers.
- Unplug any 3.5-mm headset.
- Disconnect the USB-C dock, monitor, hub, or USB audio adapter.
- In Gaming Mode, open Steam > Settings > Audio.
- If another output is selected, choose a different available device, then select the default internal speakers again.
- Test with a Steam UI sound or a game you know normally produces audio.
If you are troubleshooting a Bluetooth-specific problem, forgetting and re-pairing the device may help. It is unnecessary just to restore built-in speaker output. Valve’s audio troubleshooting steps are at Steam Deck: Audio Troubleshooting.
2. Check mute, volume, and UI sounds
- Press the physical volume-up button several times.
- Open Steam > Settings > Audio.
- Confirm the output is not muted and raise the volume to a moderate level.
- Make sure Enable UI Sounds is turned on.
- Test a system sound, then test a game or video.
If UI sounds work but one game is silent, the Deck’s speakers and general output are functioning; check that game’s audio settings and whether the problem is limited to that title. Do not use volume boosters or push a mixer beyond its normal range as a first-line fix: they can distort audio and may not survive SteamOS updates.

3. Update SteamOS and restart
A temporary audio-service state or software regression can look like failed speakers. Valve recommends installing available updates, restarting, and exiting or disabling third-party Desktop Mode applications while troubleshooting.
- Open Steam > Settings > System and install any available SteamOS or Steam client updates.
- Restart through Steam > Power > Restart.
- Test the built-in speakers before reinstalling plugins or changing advanced audio settings.
Valve’s release notes have included fixes related to internal audio and an OLED issue where rebooting could occasionally leave speaker output unavailable. That history is a reason to check for updates, not evidence that every silent Deck has the same bug. See Steam Deck news and release notes and Steam community announcements.

4. Check the output profile in Desktop Mode
If the speakers fail only in Desktop Mode—or work there but not in Gaming Mode—the difference helps narrow the cause. Desktop Mode exposes system audio outputs and profiles through the taskbar speaker controls.
- Open Steam > Power > Switch to Desktop.
- Click the speaker icon in the taskbar and inspect the available outputs.
- Select the internal speaker device rather than HDMI, Bluetooth, USB, or a virtual device.
- Check that the output is not muted. If a profile is available, choose the normal stereo speaker profile rather than an HDMI or surround profile.
- Return to Gaming Mode and test again.
Users have reported restoring audio by changing the selected internal device or switching away from a virtual/filter-chain sink, but these are community workarounds, not guaranteed Valve procedures. See the reports in the SteamOS issue tracker and Steam Community discussion. Avoid copying terminal commands from old posts: PipeWire and WirePlumber configurations vary, and resets can disrupt custom audio setups.

5. Undock and isolate HDMI or DisplayPort audio
A docked Deck may send sound to HDMI or DisplayPort even if the connected monitor has no speakers, its speakers are muted, or its audio output is set elsewhere.
- Disconnect the dock, HDMI/DisplayPort cable, USB audio devices, and hubs.
- Turn Bluetooth off temporarily.
- Restart the Deck and test its built-in speakers in Gaming Mode.
- If the speakers work, reconnect accessories one at a time to identify which device takes over audio.
For a docked display, also check the TV or monitor’s own sound output. In Desktop Mode, Valve documents changing HDMI/DisplayPort channel settings by opening the taskbar speaker menu, selecting the HDMI/DisplayPort slider, opening its three-line menu, and choosing the desired channel count. This setting does not guarantee that every display or dock combination will produce sound. See Valve’s docked audio guide.

6. Compare modes and outputs to locate the fault
Test the same known-working sound in Gaming Mode and Desktop Mode, and compare built-in speakers with headphones if available. These results are clues, not definitive hardware diagnoses.
| What you observe | What it suggests |
|---|---|
| Steam UI sounds work, but one game is silent | Check that game’s audio settings or a game-specific compatibility issue. |
| Headphones work, but built-in speakers do not | Output routing or a speaker-related hardware fault becomes more plausible. |
| Speakers and headphones both fail | Consider system-level configuration, an update regression, or a broader hardware fault. |
| Desktop Mode works, Gaming Mode does not | The difference points toward Game Mode or Steam client routing. |
| Neither mode works | A system-level issue or hardware fault is more plausible. |
| One speaker is silent or consistently much quieter | A speaker, connector, audio board, or amplifier problem is possible. |
One-sided failure, crackling or buzzing before the loss of sound, and intermittent cutouts raise concern about hardware, but none alone proves which component has failed. If the Deck was dropped, exposed to liquid, becomes abnormally hot, or has a burning smell, stop testing and seek support rather than opening it.

When to contact Steam Support
Contact Valve if the speakers remain silent in both modes after you have removed peripherals, selected the internal output, updated, restarted, and checked Desktop Mode; if no output device appears; or if there is physical or liquid damage. Support is also the sensible next step if the Deck is under warranty or you are not comfortable opening it. Start at the Steam Deck support wizard.
Recovery options such as factory reset, erasing user data, re-imaging SteamOS, or rolling back the OS are for more serious software problems—not routine speaker troubleshooting. They cannot repair a broken speaker, connector, or audio board, and some options erase games, settings, or local data. Back up important saves and personal files before using any recovery option that erases user data. Valve describes the choices in its SteamOS recovery instructions.
Should you replace a speaker yourself?
Only consider a hardware repair after routing and software checks fail, and identify the exact Deck model and revision before buying parts. Original LCD, Refreshed LCD, and OLED speaker parts are not interchangeable. iFixit says its Refreshed LCD speakers fit only the later Refreshed LCD revision; its compatibility page explains how to identify that version. The listing describes the job as moderate difficulty and about 2–3 hours, so it is not an easy first fix. If you are unsure of the revision or repair, use Valve support or a qualified repair service instead.
Valve’s audio guidance also notes that the built-in microphone is unavailable on LCD while a 3.5-mm audio plug is in use; OLED can use its built-in microphone at the same time. Bluetooth audio does not disable the built-in microphone. This distinction matters when testing a wired headset, but by itself does not indicate a speaker fault. See Valve’s audio troubleshooting guide.
