Its plans included concept art, early mechanics research and possibly a demo, but its creators cautioned that support did not guarantee a finished game.
What is the Azel Resurrection Project?
GamesBeat reported on March 19, 2021, that Azel R grew from a collaboration between the Panzer Dragoon World fan community and developer and artist Black Fenrir. The stated goal was to explore a contemporary, Saga-style game that kept the original’s spirit while using modern visuals and mechanics. The project was also seeking fan feedback and wider attention; the report said a move to Unreal Engine 5 was envisioned. GamesBeat’s report was updated June 19, 2025.
The scope was deliberately uncertain. GamesBeat quoted the project’s Patreon description: “What this project is not [is a] promise of a full game — while we are willing to pursue our vision to deliver a demo/build, there is no guarantee that it will be materialized into a finalized game.” Mega Visions’ March 19, 2021 interview likewise described high-resolution concept art, early R&D on mechanics, fan participation and a possible demo as plans, rather than completed deliverables. Read the Mega Visions interview.
Does Azel R have Sega’s permission?
In the 2021 Mega Visions interview, the community representative said the project did not have a Sega license to produce content using the Panzer Dragoon intellectual property. The cited coverage does not establish a later license or confirm that the project is currently active. It also does not establish a completed demo or an official Panzer Dragoon Saga remake.

There is a separate licensing precedent, but it does not change Azel R’s reported status. In 2020, Wildman (Haruto Watanabe) described bringing a proposal through M2 director Naoki Horii, after which Sega granted a license for Panzer Dragoon: Voyage Record. That account shows a route by which a different project obtained permission; it is not evidence that Azel R received one. Siliconera’s report on Voyage Record.
Is the Panzer Dragoon Saga PC project the same as Azel R?
No. A February 6, 2026, Time Extension report concerns a separate effort by developer yaz0r to recompile Panzer Dragoon Saga for PC. It is not Azel R and should not be confused with a new fan-designed game or an official PC release.
According to yaz0r, the recompilation began around 2015, when the project assumed the source code was lost. Because many locations, battles and interactions were custom, the work involved implementing them manually. The code was open-sourced after its last change on October 5, 2020. Time Extension reported the project had been semi-playable to a point; yaz0r said renewed interest could motivate further work, but no completion date or release was established. Time Extension’s 2026 update.
| Effort | What it aims to do | Authorization and status in the cited coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Azel R | Develop a modern creative vision inspired by Panzer Dragoon Saga, with concept art, research and a possible demo discussed. | No Sega license was reported in 2021; a finished game or current activity is not established. GamesBeat and Mega Visions, 2021. |
| yaz0r’s PC recompilation | Reconstruct and recompile the existing game for PC, including manually implemented custom elements. | A separate open-source project; semi-playable to a point in the 2026 report, with no completion date or release established. Time Extension, 2026. |
| Panzer Dragoon: Voyage Record | A separate franchise project proposed by Wildman and licensed by Sega. | Siliconera reported the license in 2020. This precedent does not establish authorization for Azel R. |
Do Atari’s comments mean a Saga remake is coming?
No announcement follows from the comment. On September 2, 2025, VGC reported that Atari CEO Wade Rosen named Panzer Dragoon Saga as a game he would personally like to work on if Atari had the opportunity. He also said he did not know whether it would do well. That was a stated preference, not a rights announcement, partnership or confirmed remaster. VGC’s report.

What should fans expect?
The best-supported description is a fan-led concept and prototyping effort whose 2021 ambitions included art, mechanics research, community input and possibly a demo. Those ambitions should not be read as proof of a released build, a completed remake, Sega authorization or ongoing development. The separate recompilation project is work on reconstructing the original software, while an officially licensed project such as Voyage Record is a different category again.
