No—not as hidden entities in unmodified Minecraft. Herobrine, the best-known Minecraft creepypasta, is a community-made legend rather than a vanilla-game character. The stories and videos are real pieces of fan culture, but they do not establish that Herobrine spawns in the official game or that any supernatural event occurred.
What does “real” mean in this context?
“Minecraft creepypasta” can refer to scary stories, videos, or game encounters shared by fans. Those works and the community around them are real. That is different from a character being part of the unmodified game: the available accounts describe Herobrine as a community-created figure, not a vanilla Minecraft entity.
This distinction also matters when watching an alleged sighting. A video may be staged, edited, or made with a mod; seeing Herobrine depicted in media is not proof that he appears in standard gameplay.
Why do Minecraft updates say “Removed Herobrine”?
“Removed Herobrine” is a recurring joke in Minecraft changelogs, not a record of a real character being removed. In a March 22, 2017 Minecraft Forum post, moderator Badprenup explained: “The developers put it in as a running joke, but Herobrine has never been in the vanilla game, nor will it be.” This is a moderator’s historical explanation, not a current official Mojang statement.

How did the Herobrine legend spread?
A historical Minecraft Forum account traces the story to an early image and later staged livestream material. That forum page is secondary historical material, rather than a statement from Mojang. Academic discussion describes how the creepypasta inspired fan claims, videos, theories, and community retellings. PC Gamer’s 2021 feature places the legend’s rise amid Minecraft’s early-2010s popularity in videos and livestreams.
The familiar image of a Steve-like figure with white eyes became a durable part of that legend. Retellings and videos helped make Herobrine feel like a shared mystery, but their circulation is evidence of a popular story—not evidence of an official mob.

Can Herobrine appear in mods, maps, or books?
Yes. Fan-made mods, maps, videos, and stories can portray Herobrine. A modded encounter is not vanilla gameplay, and a fan publication does not become official Minecraft material simply because it uses the game’s setting or imagery.
Minecraft’s Usage Guidelines allow certain fan publications and gameplay videos under conditions. Publications must contain original material and follow branding and cover-art limits; qualifying gameplay videos and streams may earn ad revenue. The guidelines also restrict using Minecraft gameplay to promote unrelated products or services without prior written approval. These rules govern permitted fan use; they do not make fan works official.

Does this answer apply to every Minecraft creepypasta?
The evidence here is strongest for Herobrine, the best-known example. It is not an exhaustive check of every character, story, game edition, or version. For any specific claim, distinguish the unmodified game from modded play, official materials from fan creations, and a documented source from a retelling or staged encounter.
