Reviews of Black Myth: Wukong most often single out its striking presentation, expressive staff-based combat, and memorable boss fights. The caveats are just as useful: this is a challenging, focused single-player action RPG rooted in Journey to the West, not an open-ended RPG built around the breadth of exploration and quests some players may expect. A PS5 review also reported performance issues, while Steam’s PC requirements call for substantial storage and list upscaling-enabled graphics specifications.

Black Myth: Wukong is a single-player action RPG based on the Chinese classic Journey to the West. PlayStation describes the player character as the Destined One, who uses staff techniques, spells, abilities, weapons, and equipment to shape a combat strategy. Steam’s description likewise emphasizes mythic landscapes, foes, spells, transformations, and equipment.

Visual presentation and world
Review excerpts collected by Metacritic highlight graphics and production quality, while PC Gamer describes the game as beautiful and challenging. Its review verdict reads: “Black Myth: Wukong blossoms with an eccentric cast of characters and expressive combat all wrapped up in the rich world of its source material.” The quotation is from PC Gamer’s review.

Combat and boss fights
Combat and boss design recur among the positive points in Metacritic’s displayed critic excerpts. Push Square’s PS5 review also praised the boss fights and explosive action, giving the game 8/10 in an August 27, 2024 follow-up. That score and judgment belong to Push Square’s review, not to a cross-outlet consensus.

What are the main caveats?
Difficulty and expectations
The reception is not unanimous. Metacritic’s displayed excerpts include a warning that the difficulty curve grows increasingly hard. Other criticism focuses on expectations: players looking for the quests, companions, weapons, and open exploration associated with an Elden Ring-style RPG may find Black Myth: Wukong more focused than they want. Those are distinct concerns—one about challenge, the other about structure—so consider both when deciding whether its approach suits you.
PS5 performance
Push Square noted performance issues in its PS5 review. This is one outlet’s platform-specific review observation from August 2024, not a controlled comparison across PS5, PC, or other platforms. The available review evidence does not establish a numerical cross-platform performance ranking.

What do the PC requirements tell you?
Steam lists these minimum and recommended requirements for Windows PC. Its graphics specifications were tested with DLSS, FSR, or XeSS enabled, so they should not be read as a guarantee of equivalent performance with upscaling disabled or on every PC configuration.

PC Gamer says its review ran on an RTX 4090, Intel Core i9-12900K, and 16 GB RAM. That describes the reviewer’s test system; it does not show how the game performs on other hardware. Check the Steam product page for its complete, current requirements.

When did it release, and where?
The storefronts list different dates by platform: Steam gives the PC release date as August 19, 2024, while PlayStation’s US page lists the PS5 release as August 20, 2024. Use the platform-specific date rather than treating either as a universal release date. The official listings are Steam and PlayStation.
These sources establish the PC and PS5 editions. They do not establish current Xbox availability or an official Xbox release date, so check the Xbox Store directly if you are considering that platform.

How to interpret review scores and user ratings
Review excerpts and user ratings answer different questions. The 8/10 score is Push Square’s own PS5 review judgment from August 2024. Steam’s displayed figures—93% positive among 71,340 English user reviews and 90% positive among 2,611 recent reviews—are a changing access-time snapshot, not critic scores or fixed ratings. Metacritic’s displayed critic excerpts are dated August 2024 and should not be treated as a current aggregate score.
For a purchase decision, give more weight to the specific trade-offs that matter to you: appetite for challenging, boss-focused action; interest in the game’s mythological setting; and, on PC, whether your hardware and storage match the storefront requirements. A high-level score cannot tell you how well the game fits those preferences.
