How this list chooses the best single-player games
The picks below combine critical recognition, historical influence, recurrence across published all-time lists, and the qualities that make a game rewarding to play. They are an editorial shortlist, not a mathematical ranking. A high critic score does not guarantee a personal favorite, and an influential game is not automatically the easiest one to approach today.

Critic scores are a snapshot
Metacritic’s all-time ordering is based on critic-score aggregation, and its displayed scores and positions can change. Its 99 Metascore for Ocarina of Time, as displayed in 2026, shows critical reception in that snapshot; it is not a timeless measurement of personal enjoyment.

Influence is different from quality ranking
BAFTA’s 2025 public poll published a top 21 of influential games. It ranked Shenmue first and Doom second, and included Super Mario Bros. in its top three. These results are about influence as judged by poll participants, not a best-game ranking. BAFTA’s awards archive is a separate record of award winners and nominees, not the same poll.
List recurrence reflects the lists selected
Acclaimed Video Games aggregates appearances across published lists and also displays platforms, genres, estimated completion times, and list counts. Its recurring candidates are useful for spotting broad editorial recognition, but the result depends on which source lists the aggregator includes; it is not an independent critic score or award.
Current recommendations have a date and an editorial lens
GamesRadar+ describes its solo-play selection as emphasizing memorable, fun experiences across genres. Its July 14, 2026 list is current editorial guidance as of that date, not an all-time consensus measure. Platform names on a recommendation page are a starting point, not confirmation of current stock or a specific edition.
Check the edition before you buy
Several recommendations are older games with multiple releases, remasters, or remakes. A title appearing on an all-time list does not establish that a particular edition is available on your console today. Before purchasing, confirm the exact title, platform, edition, and store listing. For Breath of the Wild, GamesRadar names Switch and Switch 2, but current listing details and availability should still be checked with the retailer.
