If Steam shows library_7728431_88af7cf66459d659—sometimes alongside Cannot read property 'TakeFocus' of undefined—while you are streaming a game, start by signing out of Steam on both devices, then sign in to the same account on the host and receiving device. One player reported that this cleared the matching Remote Play error. It is a user-reported workaround, not an official Valve diagnosis or guaranteed fix.
The reference appears to be an internal Steam library-interface error, not a publicly documented code with a confirmed cause. The clearest matching report occurred during Remote Play from a desktop to a laptop. The identifier alone does not establish that the game files are corrupt.

First identify where the error appears
- During Remote Play or Steam Link: Work through the streaming and session checks below first.
- When launching on the host PC itself: Treat it as a game-launch or Steam-client issue. Try a local launch, file verification, and security-software checks rather than assuming Remote Play is responsible.
- In the Steam Library or Big Picture without streaming: The error may involve the client interface or game launch. The reference’s exact internal meaning is not publicly documented.
The matching Steam Community report describes Remote Play and the TakeFocus message. No specific Steam client version, operating-system version, or official Valve incident tied to this reference is established by the available sources.
Try these fixes in order
1. Sign out on both devices and use one account
- On the host computer, choose Steam > Change Account, or use Steam’s account menu to sign out.
- Sign out on the receiving device too.
- Choose Steam > Exit on both devices so the clients close fully.
- Open Steam on the host, then open it on the receiving device. Sign in to the same account on both and make sure a second account is not left active.
- Try Remote Play again.
A user in the matching Steam Discussion said signing out and back in to only one account resolved the error. Treat that as a quick first test, not proof that multiple accounts are always the cause. You may need to reauthenticate.

2. Fully restart Steam and both devices
Exit Steam from Steam > Exit on both computers, then restart the host and receiver. If Steam will not close cleanly on Windows, check Task Manager to confirm that Steam is no longer running before reopening it. Start Steam on the host first, followed by the receiving device, and test again.
Valve recommends restarting Steam and the computer for general Steam installation and update problems because a restart can clear stale state and release locked resources. See Valve’s troubleshooting guidance.
3. Test the game locally on the host
- On the host PC, open the Steam Library and launch the affected game directly.
- Wait for it to reach its title screen or main menu, then exit it.
- Try Remote Play again.
If the game also fails locally, investigate its files, dependencies, drivers, and security software. If local launch works but streaming fails, that points more toward the session, client, permissions, or network path than a basic inability to run the game. It does not identify a single confirmed cause.

Starting the game on the host before connecting is also suggested in third-party coverage; it is a diagnostic workaround, not a Valve-confirmed fix for this reference.

4. Test the network and VPN
- For the simplest test, connect both devices to the same local network. This is a useful diagnostic setup, not a requirement for every Remote Play configuration.
- Use Ethernet for the host if available, and test the receiver near the Wi-Fi access point.
- Avoid guest Wi-Fi or network-isolation settings during the test. Temporarily disconnect VPNs on both devices.
- Restart the router and try again.
- Test another game. If Remote Play works locally but fails when you connect from outside the home, focus on the internet path, router, and firewall rather than reinstalling the game.
The same-network test and router restart are troubleshooting suggestions in the matching third-party article; they are not evidence that the router is necessarily at fault.
5. Try Steam Link or Big Picture mode
Try starting the stream through Steam Link, or try Big Picture mode on the host. These are alternate routes for diagnosis, not guaranteed repairs. If Steam Link works while the desktop Remote Play interface does not, the game and account may be usable while the desktop session or interface handoff is failing. If neither works, continue with the client, network, and game checks.

6. Update Steam, the operating system, and drivers
Let Steam finish any pending client update, restart Steam, and install pending operating-system updates. If the game fails locally too, check for graphics and network-driver updates. Valve’s game-launch guidance includes updating the operating system and drivers and disabling non-essential software when diagnosing launch failures. No particular Steam version is established as the cause of this error.
7. Verify the affected game’s files
- Open Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and let the check finish.
- Launch the game locally, then retry Remote Play.
Valve recommends verification for corrupted or incomplete game files and for some missing-executable problems (launch guidance; missing-executable guidance). Steam may redownload files. Verification does not normally remove the entire game, but it is less likely to solve a client-interface problem if the game already launches locally.

In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Storage, select the … menu for the library, then choose Repair Folder. Labels can vary slightly by operating system and Steam’s display language. This is most relevant if Steam cannot read, write, or update files; it is not a proven direct fix for the TakeFocus message. Valve documents this repair option in its Steam support instructions.

9. Clear the download cache
Choose Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache, then sign back in if prompted and test again. Valve says this clears locally cached Steam configuration data so Steam can reacquire it from its servers; it is not the same as deleting installed games. It may reset download-related state. See Valve’s instructions.
10. Check security tools and overlays
Temporarily test without non-essential overlays or background utilities, and check whether antivirus or endpoint-security software quarantined the game executable. Restore a quarantined file or add an exclusion only if you have verified that it is a legitimate game file. Re-enable protections after testing; do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled. Valve lists antivirus blocking as a possible cause of missing-executable errors and recommends checking quarantine, while its launch guidance advises disabling non-essential software during diagnosis.
11. Reinstall Steam only after protecting your data
Refresh or reinstall Steam only after the less disruptive checks fail. Backups matter because installed games and saves can live in different places, and Steam Cloud does not cover every game or save.

- Restore or re-add the existing library, verify the affected game, and test local launch before Remote Play.
Valve’s installation guidance advises preserving steamapps when moving or refreshing Steam and notes that third-party saves may be stored outside Steam Cloud. For macOS, see Valve’s instructions on preserving SteamApps in the application-support directory: macOS Steam data guidance. Do not delete the Steam folder before confirming your backups. If the game is on an external drive, also check that the drive is connected, writable, and not going to sleep; Valve cautions that installing Steam on an external hard drive can cause performance problems.
Use the symptoms to narrow the cause
| What happens | Area to investigate | Next useful test |
|---|---|---|
| One game fails both locally and remotely | Game files, dependencies, or security software | Verify files and check antivirus quarantine. |
| The game launches locally but fails when streamed | Remote Play session, client, permissions, or network path | Sign out on both devices, test the same local network, and try Steam Link. |
| All games fail over Remote Play | Steam session, client, or network configuration | Restart and update Steam, then test another client or network. |
| Only one receiving device fails | That device’s Steam or Steam Link client, account state, or connection | Update or restart that client and test its network. |
| The error began after switching accounts | Stale or conflicting session state | Sign out everywhere and sign in to the same account on both devices. |
| Steam cannot update or access the game library | Library permissions or storage access | Repair the library folder and check the drive. |
When to contact Steam Support
Contact Steam Support if local launch works but every Remote Play client still fails after these checks, multiple games and networks are affected, Steam repeatedly cannot repair or access the library, or a security tool keeps quarantining files you have verified as legitimate.
Include an uncropped screenshot of the error, the affected game, host and client operating systems, whether local launch works, whether another game works, and how the devices are connected. Valve requests an uncropped screenshot and a Steam System Report for certain persistent launch errors; see its support guidance.
