If your standard PS5 DualSense seems not to charge, check the battery indicator, then test the cable, USB port and power source before assuming the battery has failed. Sony recommends a USB cable that supports both charging and data, trying another PS5 USB port, resetting the controller and updating software. If the controller is swollen, unusually hot, smells unusual, has liquid damage or has a loose or damaged USB-C port, stop using it and seek repair.

First, check whether the DualSense is charging

On the PS5, press the PS button and open Control Center > Accessories. A charging controller should show an animated battery icon with a lightning bolt. When it is full, the icon stops animating and shows three bars. Check the icon for several seconds rather than relying on the light bar alone. Sony describes the indicator in its DualSense connection and charging guidance.

Charging, pairing and powering on are different problems. A controller can have charge but fail to reconnect wirelessly; it can also pair while its battery or charging path is faulty. Note whether the controller works while plugged in, whether the battery icon changes, and whether another cable or power source changes the result.

Before troubleshooting: check the controller and stop conditions

These steps are for the standard DualSense wireless controller. DualSense Edge has different hardware and menus; DUALSHOCK 4 uses micro-USB, not USB-C; third-party controllers may have different charging requirements. Check the accessory maker’s guidance for those devices.

Do not continue charging or troubleshooting if the controller is swollen, unusually hot, has a chemical or burning smell, has liquid damage, or has a visibly damaged or loose port. Do not open the controller or puncture, heat, freeze or short its battery. Sony’s DualSense instruction manual warns against battery exposure to fire and extreme temperatures.

Try these 15 fixes, from simplest to most diagnostic

1. Check the battery icon

Open Control Center > Accessories and watch for the animated battery icon and lightning bolt. A static icon does not establish that power is reaching the controller, even if a light appears.

2. Allow time for a deeply depleted battery

Connect the controller and leave it undisturbed for at least 30 minutes before judging the result. This is a practical test, not a Sony-mandated revival time: Sony does not specify a universal charging time for a fully depleted battery. Avoid repeatedly pressing the PS button during this test.

3. Replace the USB-C cable

Try the original cable or one explicitly described as supporting charging and data, sometimes called “charge and sync.” Sony warns that charge-only cables cannot be used for the relevant DualSense connection. A cable may power another device and still have a damaged conductor or fail to support data. See Sony’s cable guidance.

  • Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
  • DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
  • PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.

4. Try another PS5 USB port

Move the cable to a different PS5 USB port. Sony recommends this when charging fails. If one port works and another does not, the original port or its connection may be at fault. If none works, continue testing the cable and controller rather than concluding that the battery is dead.

5. Inspect and reconnect both ends

Unplug the cable, inspect both connectors for fraying, cracks, bent metal or looseness, then reconnect them firmly. A USB-C plug should work in either orientation. If only one orientation works, treat that as evidence of a damaged cable or connector, not normal behavior.

6. Carefully clear visible debris from the USB-C port

Turn off the controller and console first. If you see lint, use an air blower or a non-metallic tool gently; do not scrape the contacts, force debris deeper, pour liquid into the port or use a metal pin while anything is powered. A plug that feels loose, falls out or works only when held at an angle may indicate compacted debris or physical port damage. This is cautious maintenance guidance, not a Sony repair procedure.

7. Test a USB-standard-compliant wall charger

Sony says a compatible USB-standard-compliant charger can be used, but warns that not all USB chargers will charge a DualSense. Use a reputable charger and a known-good cable. Do not assume a higher-wattage phone or laptop charger will charge the controller faster; no such speed advantage is established here. See Sony’s charging guidance.

  • Elevate PC gaming with advanced features like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in a range of blockbuster PC titles.

8. Test the controller with a computer or another USB device

Connect the DualSense to a compatible computer using a known-good data cable, or test another USB device in the PS5 port. Sony supports DualSense USB connections with compatible PCs, Macs and mobile devices. If a computer detects the controller, some USB and controller electronics are working, but that does not prove the battery is healthy. The Sony PC, Mac and mobile guide explains compatibility.

9. Enable USB power during Rest Mode

If the controller charges when the PS5 is on but not while it is in Rest Mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode > Supply Power to USB Ports. Choose Always or 3 Hours. With 3 Hours, USB power stops after three hours. On PS5 consoles in the CFI-2000 model group, Sony also documents Adaptive. Options vary by model. See Sony’s Rest Mode charging instructions.

10. Fully restart the PS5

Turn the PS5 off rather than leaving it in Rest Mode, wait briefly, restart it and reconnect the controller. This can clear a temporary accessory or USB detection state, but it will not repair a damaged port or failed battery.

11. Reconnect the controller over USB

With the PS5 on, connect the controller using the included or another known-good data cable, then press the PS button. This is Sony’s standard reconnection method. If it reconnects, check the battery status under Control Center > Accessories. See Sony’s connection instructions.

12. Reset the DualSense

  1. Turn off the PS5.
  2. Disconnect the controller from the USB cable.
  3. Find the small reset hole on the back, next to the Sony logo.
  4. Use a pin or similar tool to hold the reset button for at least five seconds. Insert the tool only into the reset hole.
  5. Reconnect the controller to the PS5 with a known-good USB cable and press the PS button.

Sony says resetting does not reconfigure the controller or affect pairing settings. It may clear a controller-state or connection problem; it cannot fix a failed battery or physical damage. Follow Sony’s reset instructions and its controller support guidance.

13. Update PS5 system software

If the controller can operate the console, install any available system software update. Sony says DualSense controller software updates are added through PS5 system software updates. Menu wording and software versions can change, so use Sony’s current PS5 system software update instructions rather than relying on an old version number.

14. Update controller software from a PC

If the controller will not stay connected to the PS5 long enough to update, Sony’s PlayStation Accessories application can update DualSense software on a compatible PC. You need a compatible computer and a USB data cable. This cannot repair a damaged port or failed battery; avoid unofficial firmware files and tools. See Sony’s PC connection and controller update guide.

15. Use PlayStation Repairs or a qualified repair service

If several known-good cables, ports and power sources fail, and a reset and available software updates do not help, the likely fault is hardware: a degraded battery, damaged USB-C port or charging board, internal connector, liquid or impact damage, or power-management circuitry. Sony directs unresolved controller issues to PlayStation Repairs and hardware support. Repair fees, warranty coverage and turnaround depend on region, purchase details and current service availability; check with Sony before deciding.

Diagnose the symptom you see

No light, battery icon or response

  • Try a known-good USB data cable and a different PS5 port.
  • Try a compatible USB-standard-compliant charger, then reset the controller.
  • If it remains unresponsive, the fault may be in the port, battery or internal electronics; use PlayStation Repairs.

Works only while plugged in

That points toward a battery that is severely degraded or disconnected, a controller that is not actually charging, or a fault in the port or charging circuit. Confirm the result with another cable and power source before diagnosing the battery.

Charges while the PS5 is on, but not in Rest Mode

Check the USB power setting in Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode > Supply Power to USB Ports. The available choices depend on the console model; see Sony’s Rest Mode instructions.

Orange light appears, but the battery level does not rise

An indicator light alone does not prove that the battery is receiving a normal charge. Try another cable and source, leave the controller idle, and compare the battery status after 30–60 minutes. Intermittent power, a degraded battery, port contamination or damage, heavy use while charging, or a battery indicator that has not updated could explain the mismatch.

Charges from one source but not another

This points toward a source or cable compatibility issue, a damaged port, or differences in USB power behavior. Sony notes that not all USB chargers can charge DualSense controllers. Test with a known-good cable and a source that Sony says is compatible: Sony’s charging guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It charges but will not pair wirelessly

Treat this as a connection problem, not proof of a charging failure. Reconnect over USB and press the PS button; if needed, follow the reset steps above. A charged controller can still have a pairing or software-state issue.

Repair, replace, or use a charging dock?

Make this decision only after checking the console port and cable, so you do not replace a working controller when the problem is on the PS5 side.

  • Replace the cable if it is damaged, loose, too short or charge-only. Choose a reliable USB-C cable explicitly supporting charging and data.
  • Consider a charging dock for convenience after confirming the controller can charge. Contact-based docks can reduce repeated USB-C insertion, but compatibility and alignment matter; a dock will not fix a failed battery or charging circuit. Check compatibility for the exact controller model.
  • Consider battery replacement only if the controller is otherwise functional, is out of warranty, and you or a technician can perform electronics repair safely. Opening the controller can damage clips or cables, and a battery replacement will not fix a damaged port or power-management circuit. Lithium-ion battery work carries risk; a repair technician is the safer choice if you are unsure.
  • Replace the controller if repair is uneconomical, takes too long for your needs, or multiple hardware faults are present. Replacement costs more than a cable and will not solve a defective PS5 USB port.
  • Choose official repair when you suspect internal hardware failure or are not comfortable handling a lithium-ion battery. Check regional warranty and service terms directly with PlayStation Hardware & Repairs Support.
