Choose ingredients for the effect you need, then adjust the recipe to the ingredients you have.
Which meal should you cook?
| What you need | Effect to look for | Recipe example |
|---|---|---|
| Extra heart capacity | Hearty | Cook Hearty ingredients; Hyrule Archive suggests five Hearty Durians for bonus hearts. |
| Restore stamina | Energizing | Two apples and two Stambulbs make an Energizing Steamed Fruit example. |
| Extend stamina capacity | Enduring | Hyrule Archive suggests five Endura Carrots for stamina extension. |
| Deal more damage | Mighty | Meat, a mushroom, and Mighty Thistle make an attack-buff skewer. |
| Reduce incoming damage | Tough | Use ingredients with the Tough effect for a defense meal. |
| Handle a hazardous environment | Resistance suited to the hazard | Pepper Seafood is a cold-resistance example. |
| Recover gloom-damaged hearts | Sunny | Sundelion-based Sunny Fried Wild Greens is one example. |
These effects solve different problems: Hearty ingredients add bonus hearts, Energizing ingredients restore stamina, and Enduring ingredients extend stamina capacity. Mighty and Tough meals are for combat, while resistance and Sunny meals address particular hazards. Recipes with the same general purpose can still vary in healing, strength, or duration according to the ingredients and quantities used.
Best recipes for specific situations
Cold resistance: Pepper Seafood
For an early cold-resistance meal, Nintendo Life lists fish, a Skyshroom, and three Spicy Peppers. The guide reports that this combination restores five and a half hearts and grants eight and a half minutes of cold resistance. Treat those as that guide’s reported results; changing the ingredients or amounts can change the meal.
Gloom recovery: Sunny Fried Wild Greens
Nintendo Life’s example combines one Sundelion with two herbs. It reports four hearts restored and three hearts of gloom damage recovered. For a different Sunny recipe, Hyrule Archive suggests cooking five Sundelions, characterizing the result as a maximum-output option; exact caps are not established here.

Attack boost: meat, mushroom, and Mighty Thistle
Nintendo Life describes a skewer made with meat, a mushroom, and Mighty Thistle. The guide reports five hearts restored and an attack bonus lasting one minute and fifty seconds, and says adding more Mighty Thistles extends the boost. This is an example, not a verified maximum-strength recipe.
Stamina recovery: Energizing Steamed Fruit
Two apples and two Stambulbs are a guide-listed option for a meal that restores hearts and stamina. Choose an Energizing recipe when you need stamina back; choose an Enduring recipe instead when you need extra stamina capacity.
Rank #2
- Ultrahand: Using the new Ultrahand ability, Link can pick up, move, and rotate almost any object, and can even attach objects together to create bridges, vehicles, and more!
- Fuse: Magically fuse almost any object to Link’s current weapon, shield, or arrow to increase durability, damage, or even add a new effect. Experiment with lots of different combinations to come up with surprising—and sometimes hilarious—results!
- Ascend: Add a new dimension to your exploration with Ascend, which gives Link the ability to pass through solid objects above him. Rise up through ceilings, hillsides, and even certain enemies to create seemingly impossible shortcuts.
- Recall: Use Recall to make objects in motion move backward through time, letting Link ride fallen boulders skyward, recover thrown weapons, or send projectiles back where they came from.
Bonus hearts or extra stamina capacity
For bonus hearts, Hyrule Archive suggests cooking five Hearty Durians. For extra stamina capacity, it suggests five Endura Carrots. The guide describes these as maximum-output recipes, but its characterization is not independently verified here.
Defense and other environmental hazards
For combat defense, look for the Tough effect. For an environmental hazard, choose a meal that resists that specific hazard rather than assuming one resistance covers every region. Hyrule Archive’s effects guide organizes additional buff recipes by effect and location, but exact maximums and durations should be treated as guide claims rather than definitive values.

How to cook and refine a recipe
- Find a cooking pot and make sure it is lit.
- Open your inventory, select ingredients, and choose the option to hold them. You can hold up to five ingredients.
- Put the held ingredients into the lit pot. The resulting meal’s healing and effect depend on the ingredients and their quantities.
- After you cook a meal, its recipe is learned in-game, making it easier to revisit that combination.
When adapting a recipe, keep ingredients that produce the desired effect together. Adding ingredients with a different effect can change the result, and increasing or reducing quantities can alter healing or buff duration. If the exact outcome matters, use a known combination rather than treating a dish name as a fixed specification.
How to choose without wasting ingredients
- Identify the immediate problem. Pick hearts, stamina recovery, stamina extension, attack, defense, hazard resistance, or gloom recovery before selecting ingredients.
- Match the effect, not just the dish name. A meal that restores hearts may not increase heart capacity, and stamina recovery is not the same as stamina extension.
- Use what you can spare. The listed examples are options, not mandatory recipes; ingredient availability can vary as you explore.
- Be cautious with “maximum” claims. Hyrule Archive presents several five-ingredient options as maximum-output recipes, but exact caps are not independently established in the cited material.
Sources and scope
The recipe combinations and reported outcomes above are attributed to secondary guides: Nintendo Life’s Tears of the Kingdom cooking guide and Hyrule Archive’s cooking effects guide. Their recipe figures are guide-reported, not independent test results. Nintendo’s official US product page identifies the game as a Nintendo Switch title released May 12, 2023; it does not document the cooking mechanics described here.
