“Stutterlands” was a player nickname for the PC stuttering and performance problems reported during Borderlands 4’s September 2025 launch—not an official title. At the time, complaints about optimization were prominent in negative Steam reviews, but those reports and the launch-period review snapshot do not establish how the game performs for every PC or how it runs today.
Why were players calling Borderlands 4 “Stutterlands”?
The nickname combined the game’s name with players’ complaints about stuttering. Insider Gaming’s September 12, 2025 report said 41% of Steam reviews were negative at that point and described optimization and performance as the leading concern. The figure is a historical snapshot from that date, not the game’s current Steam rating.

Players described stutters, frame drops, crashes, and trouble launching or keeping the game running. These are user reports gathered during launch backlash, not results from a controlled benchmark or a representative survey of all players. Steam discussions also include individual anecdotes, which can illustrate what some users experienced but cannot establish how common a problem was across PC configurations.
Did the patches fix the PC stuttering?
2K’s update notes document early stability and performance work, but they do not show that every player’s problem was fixed. On September 13, 2025, 2K said an update was intended “to improve stability across a wide range of PCs.” Its September 18 notes said an update “improves stability on PC,” and the September 25 notes cited “stability and performance improvements.” Those are the publisher’s descriptions of the changes, not proof of a universal result.

The available update information does not establish performance across all PCs after later patches or provide a current, independently tested comparison. A player’s result can depend on hardware, settings, resolution, and the scene being played, so a report from one setup should not be treated as a prediction for another.
What PC performance did 2K say to expect?
2K’s optimization guide gives these publisher targets. They are expectations for specified settings, not independent benchmark findings or guarantees for every system.

The guide also advises players to account for shader recompilation after changing graphics settings. Recompiling can take up to 15 minutes, and 2K says: “Please keep playing for at least 15 minutes to see how your PC’s performance has changed.” That is a recommendation for assessing the effect of a settings change; it does not promise that stuttering will disappear.

- The CPU and GPU, along with the resolution used.
- The graphics preset and any individual settings changed.
- Whether upscaling or frame generation was enabled.
- Whether shaders had finished recompiling after a settings change.
- The scene or workload tested, since performance can vary during play.
- Whether the claim is a publisher target, an independent benchmark, or an individual player report.
The launch-era sources behind the “Stutterlands” discussion include 2K’s stated targets and player anecdotes, but not an independently controlled benchmark dataset. They therefore cannot settle how the game performs on a particular PC or prove that a specific GPU upgrade is necessary.
