Borderlands 4 has 60 FPS Performance and 30 FPS Quality mode targets on PS5 and Xbox Series X, but those targets have not been verified as locked frame rates. Digital Foundry’s September 19, 2025 review reported that performance could deteriorate during extended play on PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X, with extreme cases falling into the mid-30s. Gearbox later documented performance work across platforms, but did not publish updated console frame-rate or resolution measurements. That makes the launch-era review useful context—not a complete picture of how the game performs after later updates.
What performance modes do PS5 and Xbox Series X offer?
Digital Foundry’s September 19, 2025 console review identifies two mode targets: Performance mode aims for 60 FPS, while Quality mode aims for 30 FPS. These are targets, not guarantees that the game will hold those rates in every scene or throughout a long session.
The available evidence does not establish current, post-update resolution ranges for PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S. It also does not provide updated sustained frame-rate measurements for those consoles. Avoid treating PC figures or unverified community estimates as console benchmarks.
How did the consoles perform in the September 2025 review?
Digital Foundry reported that frame rates could decline during extended play on PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X. In the most extreme cases it described, performance fell to the mid-30s. The review said quitting and restarting the game could work around the degradation. These findings describe the review period in September 2025; they do not establish how every console performs after subsequent patches.

The review also covers Xbox Series S, but the available review summary does not provide reliable specifics for that console’s mode availability, resolution or sustained frame rate. There is not enough evidence here to give Series S a precise performance comparison with the other consoles.
What did Gearbox change in later updates?
In its December 11, 2025 major update notes, Gearbox said performance improvements were available on all platforms. The listed work included CPU optimizations related to PGO, fewer shader and PSO compilation hitches, foliage and Lumen optimizations, and general stability work. The notes also list a reduction in a rare black-screen situation after the vault loading screen on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Gearbox reported 9%–20% measured frame-rate gains on minimum-spec and recommended-spec PC hardware. That percentage applies to those PC configurations only; the update gives no corresponding console-specific gain, before-and-after frame rate or resolution figure. As a result, the patch confirms console-related work but does not show exactly how much it changed console performance.

- If you want the higher frame-rate target: Performance mode is the 60 FPS-target option identified by Digital Foundry.
- If you prefer the visual-quality target: Quality mode is the 30 FPS-target option identified by the same review.
- If you play for long sessions: The September 2025 review documented performance degradation on PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X and reported restarting as a workaround. It did not verify whether that issue persists unchanged after later updates.
- If you need a current console-to-console benchmark: The cited update notes do not provide post-update resolution or sustained frame-rate measurements, and the available Series S summary lacks comparable specifics.
Borderlands 4 launched worldwide for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on September 12, 2025, according to 2K’s launch announcement. Gearbox’s December 11, 2025 update notes document the later performance and stability work; Gearbox’s editions FAQ confirms console Standard Editions are available physically, while digital editions are also listed.
