Recommended Free Tools
There is no single best MMORPG: the right pick depends on whether you want a story-led adventure, a player-run economy, high-stakes PvP, or a low-cost way to start. For a 2024-oriented shortlist, consider Final Fantasy XIV and World of Warcraft for theme-park questing, Albion Online for a sandbox with full-loot PvP, Guild Wars 2 for buy-to-play access, and Brighter Shores as a free-to-play MMO that entered early access in 2024. These games do not share one payment model, and free entry is not the same as a wholly free experience.
How to choose an MMORPG
MMORPGs differ more in focus, setting, and payment model than a simple ranking can show. A useful first filter is what you want to do most: follow a long quest, build wealth through other players, fight in structured or open-world PvP, or try a game without paying up front. PC Gamer’s 2024 guide likewise presents MMO choice as a matter of preference rather than a universal winner: PC Gamer’s best MMO guide.
- Story and guided progression: Look for a quest-led game with a substantial PvE world.
- Sandbox and economy: Check whether crafting, trading, and player decisions shape the world.
- PvP risk: Find out whether PvP is optional, structured, or part of open-world play—and whether defeat costs you equipment.
- Cost and commitment: Separate free entry from subscription access, expansions, or optional paid conveniences. A free trial, where available, is also different from a free-to-play game.
- Social play: Consider whether you want guilds, parties, player-run markets, or large-scale group activities.
MMORPGs for different kinds of players
For a story-led theme park: Final Fantasy XIV
Final Fantasy XIV is a subscription-based MMORPG, not a free-to-play pick. PC Gamer identifies it as subscription-based, so include recurring cost in your decision rather than treating it as a no-cost alternative. Its place on a shortlist is for readers drawn to a guided, story-centered theme-park structure; check the current official access terms before purchasing, since the reviewed sources do not establish the details of any current trial or edition.
For an established subscription world: World of Warcraft
World of Warcraft is another established subscription MMO, not a free-to-play recommendation. In 2024, its The War Within expansion was a major release, and the game marked its 20th anniversary. Those milestones provide context for its long-running world, but they do not change its payment model. PC Gamer’s 2024 year-in-review covers the release and anniversary: PC Gamer’s 2024 MMO coverage.

For a player-driven sandbox and PvP: Albion Online
Albion Online is the clearest fit here for players who want a sandbox economy rather than a strictly guided quest path. GameSpot describes it as a free-to-play, top-down fantasy MMORPG with optional subscription, classless combat, a player-run economy, and full-loot PvP. Full-loot means PvP carries a meaningful gear-loss risk, so it is not the safest choice if you want combat without that consequence. GameSpot’s MMO guide.
Albion also received MMORPG.com’s 2024 awards for Best Indie MMO and Best Mobile MMO. Those are selections by that publication, not a genre-wide consensus or a measured popularity ranking. The outlet highlighted a blend of PvE and PvP, its player-driven economy, and its distinctive setting: MMORPG.com’s 2024 awards.

For buy-to-play access: Guild Wars 2
Guild Wars 2 is identified by PC Gamer as buy-to-play. That makes it distinct from both a subscription-required game and a free-to-play title: the base access model involves buying the game, and expansion or edition terms should be checked before purchase. The available sources establish the model but do not provide current regional prices or a complete comparison of included content.
For a free-to-play game in early access: Brighter Shores
Brighter Shores, created by RuneScape designer Andrew Gower, entered early access as a free-to-play MMO in 2024. Early access is not the same as a full commercial launch, so this is a pick for readers willing to try a game still in development rather than a finished-world recommendation. PC Gamer’s 2024 year-in-review notes its early-access release: PC Gamer’s 2024 MMO coverage.

How free-to-play compares with other access models
Free-to-play means a player can enter without buying the base game; it does not guarantee that every feature, convenience option, or later release is free. The reviewed sources establish these models for the games below, but not current prices, regional availability, or every purchase condition.
| Game | Access model established by the cited source | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Albion Online | Free-to-play with optional subscription, according to GameSpot’s guide | Player-run economy and full-loot PvP |
| Brighter Shores | Free-to-play early access in 2024, according to PC Gamer | Early access is not a full commercial launch |
| Final Fantasy XIV | Subscription-based, according to PC Gamer | Not a free-to-play game |
| World of Warcraft | Not stated in the cited 2024 release coverage | The War Within was a major 2024 release; the cited source does not establish its payment terms |
| Guild Wars 2 | Buy-to-play, according to PC Gamer | Not free-to-play under the cited classification |
What changed around the genre in 2024
Established games kept expanding
World of Warcraft’s The War Within arrived during the game’s 20th anniversary year. The Elder Scrolls Online also received the Gold Road expansion. PC Gamer’s year-in-review writer assessed Gold Road negatively; that is the writer’s reception judgment, not an objective measure of the expansion’s quality. PC Gamer’s 2024 MMO coverage.

A fan-server project received official licensing
NCSoft granted an official license to City of Heroes: Homecoming in 2024. This distinguishes Homecoming from unofficial fan-server projects; the licensing milestone alone does not make it a new 2024 game release. PC Gamer reported the development in its year-in-review coverage: PC Gamer’s 2024 MMO coverage.
Awards are editorial choices, not universal rankings
MMORPG.com named New World: Aeternum its Most Improved MMO in its 2024 awards. It also named Ashes of Creation Most Anticipated while describing it as still in development, so Ashes should not be treated as a released 2024 game to play. These labels report one outlet’s selections, not a definitive ranking of the genre. MMORPG.com’s 2024 awards.

- D&D Board game
- Play time: 45+ minutes
- 1 rulebook, 1 game board, 2 dice, 165 cards, 8 hero standees, 139 die-cut tokens
Which MMORPG should you play?
- Choose Albion Online if you want free entry, a player-run economy, and are comfortable with full-loot PvP risk.
- Choose Brighter Shores if you want a free-to-play option and accept early-access development status.
- Consider Final Fantasy XIV or World of Warcraft if you prefer established, quest-led worlds and accept that the cited sources do not frame them as free-to-play.
- Consider Guild Wars 2 if buying access suits you better than recurring subscription access.
Use that fit-first shortlist rather than treating awards or popularity language as proof that one game is best for everyone. Verify the current official store terms in your region before committing money: the cited sources establish broad access categories, not up-to-date prices or every edition’s included content.
