Which PS2 games still hold up?
“Hold up” can mean different things: responsive mechanics, a compelling story, distinctive art direction, or a memorable social experience. A PS2 game may remain creatively engaging while showing its age in camera control, interface design, or visual presentation. The best choice is often the one whose central appeal survives those older conventions.
#1 Best Overall
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
For open worlds and exploration
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas offers the broadest kind of freedom on this list: players can follow missions or spend time exploring and pursuing side activities. It is a natural pick for players who want a large, varied world rather than a tightly linear campaign.
For racing: precision or spectacle
Gran Turismo 4 favors a more considered approach to driving and car collection. Burnout 3: Takedown is the contrasting choice: its appeal is fast arcade racing and high-impact collisions. Pick Gran Turismo 4 for simulation-minded play; pick Burnout 3 for immediate, aggressive action.

- Drive through the largest GTA environment ever -- The game has three cities players can explore, for a gaming area 5 times larger than Vice City
- Recruit new characters into a street gang and take over by leading drive-by shootings against rivals Steal all-new vehicles, including bicycles
- Improved fighting elements -- smoother hand-to-hand combat, plus the ability to hold a weapon in each hand
- New graphics elements as cars get dirty and even rust, the longer you drive them
- Advanced role-playing elements -- Unlike previous GTA characters, Carl can swim and he needs to eat to survive
For long-form role-playing
Dragon Quest VIII and Final Fantasy X both suit players ready for a substantial fantasy RPG, but they represent different series and storytelling styles. Choose Dragon Quest VIII for a classic-feeling journey, or Final Fantasy X for a more character-led presentation.
For atmosphere, action, or competition
Silent Hill 2 is a horror recommendation for mood and psychological unease rather than constant action. God of War puts combat and mythic spectacle up front. Capcom vs. SNK 2 is the pick for versus fighting, especially if a crossover roster is more appealing than a solo campaign.

What made the PS2 library distinctive?
The PlayStation 2 launched in 2000, and Sony highlights both its game library and DVD playback as defining features. Its Emotion Engine supported more ambitious game designs, while the console’s reach gave developers room to serve many audiences, from racing and role-playing fans to horror and platform-game players. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s company history places the console in that broader platform context.
Online play also arrived for supported games: PlayStation’s history says the Network Adaptor enabled it in 2001, naming titles including Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and Capcom vs. SNK 2. The last official PS2 server, for Final Fantasy XI, remained active until 2016, so readers should not assume PS2 online services are generally still available. PlayStation’s PS2 history timeline gives the platform’s online-play history and examples.

- There's all-new non-player character animations, with superior 3D details -- even full facial expressions and lip synchs

- You can even drive vehicles like the motorized rail car, train, and mine cart
Popularity is not the same as quality
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has a particularly strong popularity case: GamesRadar+ reported in 2025, citing Mat Piscatella and Circana Retail Tracking Service, that it was the PS2’s best-selling game in the United States by both units and dollars. That is a US retail-sales measure, not proof that it is objectively the best game or the right first pick for every player. The same report cited more than 46.5 million PS2 consoles sold in the United States, also according to Circana’s retail tracking figures. GamesRadar+’s report on the US sales figures explains the attribution.
Sony’s separate 2009 press release said more than 250 PS2 titles had earned “Greatest Hits” status and that the company had reached 50 million North American PS2 sell-in units by the end of December 2008. Those are Sony’s historical corporate figures, with a North American sell-in milestone rather than a US consumer-sales total. A sales milestone, a publisher label, a critic aggregate, and an editorial recommendation describe different things. Sony’s 2009 announcement provides the company’s figures and framing.

Finding and playing PS2 games today
Some recommendations may require an original PS2 disc, and the availability of used copies varies. Before buying a physical game, check the disc’s condition, region, included packaging, and compatibility with your hardware. For example, a listing for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas should clearly be the PS2 disc edition if that is what you need; do not assume a listing for another platform or a later release is interchangeable. Original hardware owners may also need a PS2 memory card to save games.
