Bungie’s Marathon revival launched on March 5, 2026, for Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The game is a sci-fi extraction shooter set on Tau Ceti IV; Bungie’s latest announced plans shift away from a strict seasonal schedule, with a major Symbiosis update planned for December 8, 2026.
Marathon’s launch date and platforms
The release is no longer upcoming: Bungie announced March 5, 2026, as the launch date, and Steam lists the same date. Marathon is available on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Bungie’s launch announcement and the Steam store listing confirm the date and platforms.

Bungie’s launch announcement establishes the eventual date but does not give a detailed account of the earlier delay, so its cause should not be assumed.
What kind of game is Marathon?
Marathon is a PvPvE survival extraction shooter set on the lost colony of Tau Ceti IV. Players scavenge for loot and intel, take contracts, fight rival players and hostile forces, and attempt to extract. Bungie describes the original live-game experience as cutthroat and winner-takes-all, while also aiming to add other ways to engage with its world. Bungie’s roadmap outlines that broader direction.

What Bungie has announced for post-launch
Bungie’s September 2026 update said content originally planned for September would move to the December 8, 2026 Symbiosis update. These are announced plans, not confirmation that the features have already shipped. Bungie’s development update lists the planned additions:
- A permanent PvE experience.
- A refreshed Perimeter zone and a social space with a firing range.
- A new Runner shell.
- An experimental PvP Team Deathmatch mode.
- Improvements to onboarding.
Progression reset and schedule changes
Bungie said an October 6 refresh would reset progression and the in-game economy, add a new Rewards Pass, and deliver quality-of-life, tuning, and balance changes. The studio said Season 2’s progression and reward issues accelerated some players while leaving others behind. It also said it was moving away from fixed seasonal deadlines to give the team more flexibility to build, test, and improve features before release.

Broader roadmap
In a separate roadmap post, Bungie described a planned March evolution involving connected PvE, PvP, and PvEvP experiences; deeper shell progression; a refactored Cradle; more narrative; new enemies; and a new zone. Cross-play, cross-save, and editions
Bungie says Marathon supports cross-play and cross-save. Cross-save requires an internet connection, a copy of the game for each system you use, and linked platform and Bungie.net accounts; cross-save does not mean one purchase supplies copies for every platform. Collector’s Edition
Bungie also announced a physical Collector’s Edition containing a 1/6-scale Thief Runner Shell statue, a miniature WEAVEworm, an embroidered patch, postcards, digital rewards, and other items. The Steam listing is a digital storefront page; it does not establish that a physical game disc is available.
