Sony did not disclose a total number of Bungie jobs cut in its statement. GeekWire reported that a Washington State WARN filing listed 292 Bungie job losses in Bellevue, effective July 9—a local filing count, not a company-wide total supplied by Sony.
How many Bungie employees were laid off?
Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hermen Hulst said the cuts affected a “significant number” of Bungie employees, including most—but not all—of the Destiny team and some Marathon team members. Sony also said teams at SIE that support Bungie would be affected. Its announcement did not give an overall headcount.

GeekWire reported that a Washington State Employment Security Department WARN filing listed 292 Bungie job losses in Bellevue, with an effective separation date of July 9, 2026. That figure describes the jobs in the Bellevue filing; it should not be read as Sony’s stated total across Bungie and supporting SIE teams. The report identified affected roles across areas including art, engineering, production, design, technical animation, and audio.
Why is Bungie laying people off?
Hulst said Sony and Bungie leaders had spent months reviewing the studio’s direction, development priorities, resource needs, and role within Sony’s portfolio. He said they considered alternatives before concluding that a reduction was necessary to align resources with current priorities and long-term goals. Those are Sony’s stated reasons, not an independently established account of every factor behind the cuts. Sony’s June 25 announcement included Hulst’s explanation.

In its report on the WARN filing, GeekWire said Bungie’s accompanying explanation cited Destiny 2 falling short of expectations in recent years and future projects remaining in early incubation. Bungie said it could no longer operate at its previous size. This describes the company’s rationale; it does not establish a separate financial or performance analysis.
How the layoffs relate to Destiny 2’s final live-service update
The cuts came after Bungie announced on May 21 that Monument of Triumph, released June 9, 2026, would be Destiny 2’s final live-service content update. Bungie said the game would remain playable after active development concluded. The end of planned live-service updates is not the same as the game shutting down, and Sony’s wording does not mean every person on the Destiny team was laid off. Bungie’s announcement set out the update and continued-playability details.

What happens to Destiny 2 now?
On September 17, Bungie leaders Poria Torkan and Josh Deane outlined a later direction that includes work to restore vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids. This is a plan to bring back previously vaulted content; it does not reverse the earlier announcement that the June 9 update was the final live-service content update. The September post describes direction rather than giving delivery dates for each restoration. The leaders also cautioned that “Trust won’t be rebuilt through a single blog, video, or release.” Their studio update describes the plans.
Is Bungie still working on Marathon?
Sony said some Marathon team members were affected, but did not say that the whole team was eliminated or that development had stopped. In September, Bungie leadership said it planned to evolve Marathon toward a deeper survival experience. The update describes the studio’s intended direction, not a guaranteed release schedule.

How these cuts fit Bungie’s recent workforce history
GeekWire’s June 2026 report placed the layoffs against earlier reductions since Sony acquired Bungie in 2022. It reported roughly 100 Bungie jobs cut in October 2023 and 220 roles eliminated in July 2024, then described more than 600 jobs cut across three rounds. The report also noted that 155 roles were transferred to SIE in 2024; those transfers are distinct from eliminated jobs. Bungie had more than 1,400 employees before the cuts began, a historical figure rather than a current headcount.
