There is no single best PS2 Mortal Kombat for every player. Choose Shaolin Monks for cooperative action-adventure, Deception for its range of side modes, Armageddon for its revised adventure and kart racing, or Deadly Alliance to explore the series’ character-specific fighting styles.

Which PS2 Mortal Kombat is right for you?

Game Best fit What sets it apart
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (2002) Versus fighting and the 3D-era fighting system Characters have distinct fighting styles; contemporary review coverage highlights versus play. [GameSpot]
Mortal Kombat: Deception (2004) Variety and continuing story Story-driven Konquest, Chess Kombat, Puzzle Kombat, and arena death traps. [GameSpot]
Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks (2005) Action-adventure, especially co-op One- or two-player play as Liu Kang or Kung Lao in an adventure based on the worlds of the first two Mortal Kombat games. [GameSpot]
Mortal Kombat: Armageddon (2006) Extra modes and a substantial adventure Includes Motor Kombat kart racing and a third-person Konquest adventure with group combat and traps. [GameSpot]

Best PS2 Mortal Kombat for cooperative play: Shaolin Monks

Pick Shaolin Monks if you want to play with a friend rather than spend the session in traditional one-on-one fights. Midway Games’ 2005 fact sheet describes it as an action-adventure built around one- or two-player gameplay, with Liu Kang and Kung Lao as playable characters. The adventure draws on the settings of Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II. [GameSpot]

That makes it the clearest choice for a beginner who wants to learn the series through exploration and cooperative action. It is a spin-off in format, not another conventional entry in the fighting-game sequence.

Best for side modes and story: Deception

Deception follows Deadly Alliance, so it is the natural next pick if you want to follow the connected story. Its appeal also extends beyond standard matches: GameSpot describes a story-driven Konquest mode, Chess Kombat, Puzzle Kombat, and arenas with death traps. [GameSpot]

#1 Best Overall

Choose it if you want a traditional fighter with several distinct ways to spend time outside versus matches. For story context, playing Deadly Alliance first gives you the preceding chapter.

Best for a bigger adventure: Armageddon

Armageddon combines traditional fighting with extra activities. Its Motor Kombat mode is a kart-racing minigame, while Konquest is a third-person adventure with group combat and traps. GameSpot’s review judged this adventure mode an improvement over the version in Deception. [GameSpot]

Rank #2
Mortal Kombat Deception - PlayStation 2 (Renewed)
  • Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
  • New features and game modes including interactive environments, death trap and free roaming Konquest mode
  • Multiple secret characters to unlock
  • Also has intense action board games -- plus puzzle games with fatalities
  • 10 character Video BIOS

It suits players who want a broad package rather than only a sequence of versus fights. The available evidence supports its extra modes and adventure focus, but not a comparative claim about which game has the largest roster.

Best for the 3D-era fighting system: Deadly Alliance

Deadly Alliance is a good starting point if your priority is learning how the PS2-era entries handle character-specific fighting styles. GameSpot’s review describes characters as moving differently and calls versus play the game’s highlight, while noting that the single-player AI can fall into predictable patterns. [GameSpot]

Rank #3
Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks - PlayStation 2
  • Single or Two-player co-op gameplay. Play as Liu Kang or Kung Lao, each with their own unique repertoire of four Attack Styles plus Special Attacks, and Fatalities
  • 10 new Fatalities - unleash bigger and better versions as your hero progresses
  • Let loose the incredible Multality, a room-clearing wave of destruction destroying multiple enemies at one time
  • Weapon Kombat - Discover weapons throughout your journey and use them to increase the damage on your enemy Kombatants
  • Fully interactive environments - Melt enemies in acid pits, impale them on spiked ceilings, and hang them from hooks

That makes it a stronger fit for head-to-head play or curiosity about the series’ fighting-system shift than for a player looking mainly for a varied solo adventure.

How the PS2 games fit together

The four recommendations are different kinds of picks, not interchangeable versions of the same experience. Deadly Alliance, Deception, and Armageddon are traditional fighting games with different extra modes; Shaolin Monks is an action-adventure. For story order, Deception follows Deadly Alliance, while Shaolin Monks revisits the worlds of the first two games. [GameSpot] [GameSpot]

Rank #4
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance - PlayStation 2
  • Intricate, supernatural storyline
  • Unprecedented alliance between Shang Tsung and Quan Chi
  • This new alliance threatens the lives of Raiden and the mortals

What is in the PS2 Mortal Kombat Kollection?

The 2008 PS2 Mortal Kombat Kollection bundled Deception, Armageddon, and Shaolin Monks. It did not include Deadly Alliance, according to Midway’s announcement. If you want all four games in this list, the compilation alone is not enough. [GameSpot]

Finding a copy

Look for the specific PS2 game or, if you want its three included titles, the Mortal Kombat Kollection. Availability, price, condition, and whether a listing includes a complete copy vary by seller; check the individual listing rather than assuming a current stock or price.
