For a dramatic, named motorsport story, choose F1 25; for narrative missions in a large open world, choose Forza Horizon 5. Need for Speed Unbound suits players who want street-racing campaign progression, while The Crew Motorfest is built around short, themed car-culture campaigns. These games use “story mode” in different ways, so the right pick depends on whether you want plot, mission chapters, or a themed run of racing activities.

How these racing games use story

“Story mode” is not one consistent feature across racing games. Here, it ranges from a dramatic narrative chapter to chapter-based missions, escalating campaign objectives, and themed playlists. The official descriptions establish each format, but do not provide comparable evidence for story length, writing quality, or which game is best written.

Game Narrative format Racing identity Best fit
F1 25 Braking Point 3, a dramatic story chapter; My Team 2.0 offers a way to create personal F1 stories Formula racing Players looking for an explicitly dramatic motorsport narrative
Forza Horizon 5 Horizon Stories: narrative missions that progress through chapters Open-world festival driving Players who want story missions alongside a broad range of driving activities
Need for Speed Unbound Campaign progression through police evasion, weekly qualifiers, and a final street-racing challenge Street racing Players drawn to escalating street-racing objectives
The Crew Motorfest Short, themed Playlists built around car-culture settings, races, events, and challenges Mixed car-culture events, including street, off-road, and track driving Players who prefer varied themed activities to a single character-led plot

F1 25: the pick for a dramatic F1 story

F1 25 includes the third chapter of Braking Point. PlayStation describes its premise as a crisis at Konnersport, with the player trying to recover and compete for the World Championship. Of these four games, this is the clearest fit if you specifically want a named, dramatic narrative set in a motorsport world.

The game also features a revamped My Team mode, called My Team 2.0. PlayStation presents it as a way to create personal F1 stories while making team-management choices and driving race weekends. That is a different kind of storytelling from following a scripted drama: it lets the player shape a team experience around the racing.

Forza Horizon 5: the pick for open-world story missions

Forza Horizon 5 offers Horizon Stories within its open-world festival setting. Playground Games’ starting guide says that after the opening event, players can choose a Horizon Story. It defines these as “special missions with a narrative arc that progresses as you complete its chapters” and names El Camino – Into the Storm and Vocho – The Vocho as early options.

This structure suits players who want narrative goals woven into a larger driving experience. The cited guide establishes chapter-based stories; it does not describe them as one continuous, character-led drama. PlayStation’s campaign overview likewise frames the game around activities in an open Mexico environment.

Need for Speed Unbound: the pick for street-racing progression

Need for Speed Unbound is the option here for players who want a campaign built around street-racing stakes and rising objectives. EA says players race against time, outsmart police, and take on weekly qualifiers to reach The Grand, described as Lakeshore’s ultimate street-racing challenge.

That description supports choosing Unbound for campaign momentum and street-racing objectives, but it does not establish how much dialogue the game contains or how its writing compares with the other picks. See EA’s official Need for Speed page for its description and updates.

The Crew Motorfest: the pick for themed car-culture campaigns

The Crew Motorfest organizes its content into Playlists. Ubisoft calls them “a series of short thematic campaigns” based on different car-culture universes, with tailored races, themed events, and challenges. Its open world includes street races, off-road areas, and track driving.

  • 1 player game; Network Players 2-16 - Full game requires PlayStation Plus membership to access online multiplayer

In this game, “campaign” means a themed playlist structure; it should not be taken to mean a single character-driven plot. Choose Motorfest if the appeal is moving between distinct automotive themes and kinds of event. Ubisoft’s official page lists PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, PC, Nintendo Switch 2, and Ubisoft+ availability as of October 8, 2026. Storefront formats and regional availability may differ, so verify the listing for your platform.
