Americans can generally buy Nintendo exposure through NTDOY, an over-the-counter American Depositary Receipt (ADR), if their broker supports it. Some brokers may also accept orders for Nintendo’s ordinary shares on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, but access depends on the broker.
How can Americans buy Nintendo stock?
There are two possible routes: the U.S.-traded NTDOY ADR or Nintendo ordinary shares listed in Tokyo. They are different instruments traded in different markets, so confirm the security and venue your broker offers before placing an order.
| Route | Instrument and venue | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| NTDOY | Unsponsored ADR traded over the counter in the United States | Citi’s program information lists four depositary receipts for one Nintendo ordinary share. Availability depends on the broker. Citi Depositary Receipt Services |
| 7974 | Nintendo ordinary shares on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market | Nintendo identifies its stock code as 7974. A U.S. broker’s ability to route a Tokyo order is not universal. Nintendo investor relations; SEC guidance on foreign-market orders |
What is the difference between NTDOY and Nintendo shares in Tokyo?
NTDOY is an ADR
An ADR is a U.S.-traded depositary receipt linked to shares held outside the United States. Citi identifies NTDOY as an unsponsored ADR: it was established without Nintendo’s cooperation. Citi lists a ratio of four depositary receipts to one ordinary share. An ADR is not the same instrument as directly holding ordinary shares in Tokyo. SEC Investor Bulletin: American Depositary Receipts
7974 is the Tokyo-listed ordinary share
Buying 7974 through a foreign-market order means trading the ordinary share in Tokyo, if your broker provides that service. That route may involve different currency handling, order rules, fees, and shareholder services than buying an ADR; check the specifics with the broker and depositary program.
What does Nintendo’s 100-share trading unit mean?
Nintendo reports a 100-share trading unit for its ordinary shares as of March 31, 2026. This describes the standard trading unit for Tokyo-market shares; it does not establish the minimum order size your particular U.S. broker will accept. Ask whether it permits smaller orders or imposes a separate minimum. Nintendo investor relations

Does buying an ADR make you a Nintendo shareholder in the same way?
NTDOY represents an interest through a depositary arrangement, while 7974 is the ordinary share traded in Tokyo. The services and procedures available to holders can differ. The SEC explains that unsponsored ADRs are established without the non-U.S. company’s cooperation and may be initiated by a broker-dealer seeking to create a U.S. trading market. Confirm the program’s current terms and how any shareholder matters are handled before trading. SEC Investor Bulletin: American Depositary Receipts
