If you’re new to real-time strategy, start with Age of Empires IV for the clearest guided path from tutorial to campaign. Prefer a classic historical setting? Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition teaches through its William Wallace campaign and lets you practise against AI. For science fiction, StarCraft II has publisher-documented beginner onboarding, though its free-content terms should be checked against the current offer.

What makes an RTS beginner-friendly?

A real-time strategy game asks you to gather resources, build a base, produce units, develop technology and respond to events while the game continues in real time. For a first game, the most useful features are a clear tutorial, a campaign or practice mode that lets you learn at your own pace, and a setting that interests you enough to keep going.

No single game is objectively easiest for every newcomer. These recommendations focus on documented teaching features and practical ways to get started, rather than a claim that one game is universally simpler.

Which beginner-friendly RTS should you choose?

Game Good fit if you want Start here What to expect
Age of Empires IV: Anniversary Edition A historical setting and a clear tutorial-to-campaign route Mission Zero, then Art of War, then the Norman Campaign You’ll learn resource gathering, building, advancing through Ages and controlling an army. Choose campaign or multiplayer after learning the basics. Age of Empires IV official site
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition Historical campaigns and practice at a gentler pace William Wallace campaign; then try AI skirmishes or lower-difficulty campaigns The game’s four technology Ages and civilization differences offer substantial strategic variety to learn. StarCraft II A science-fiction setting and publisher-documented beginner onboarding Follow the beginner tutorial and check the current offer for available campaigns and modes Blizzard’s onboarding materials describe a beginner tutorial, but the cited free-access details date to 2017; check the current terms before relying on a particular free campaign or mode. Why Age of Empires IV is a strong first pick

Age of Empires IV lays out a particularly legible learning sequence. Its Mission Zero introduces the main match loop—gathering resources, building, producing units, researching and responding to threats. Art of War then provides focused practice in economy and combat before the Norman Campaign gives you a longer setting in which to apply those skills. The game’s official guide describes this route and presents campaign and multiplayer as alternatives after the basics. See the official Age of Empires IV guide.

Asmodee Sid Meier's Civilization: A New Dawn Board Game - Rewrite History Your Way! Strategy Game for Kids & Adults , Ages 14+, 2-4 Players, 1-2 Hour Playtime
  • Offers new, streamlined form of gameplay
  • Multiple paths of victory offer unique strategy opportunity
  • Expansive game engages both new and experienced players

This progression is useful if an open-ended match feels like too many decisions at once: you can learn the basic actions before taking on a campaign. If you would rather get straight into a long historical story, Age of Empires II’s teaching campaign may suit you better.

When Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is the better fit

The William Wallace campaign teaches fundamental skills, making it a natural entry point for players who want to learn through historical missions. The official guide also recommends lower difficulty for newcomers starting historical campaigns and describes AI skirmishes with adjustable difficulty. That gives you room to practise without treating a first match as a test. See the official Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition page.

  • STRATEGY AND COMPETITION: Compete with 2-3 opponents to expand your settlements and cities while managing resources and avoiding the robber.
  • TRADE, BUILD, AND SETTLE: Use brick, wood, wheat, ore, and sheep to construct roads, settlements, and cities in your race to 10 victory points.
  • REPLAYABLE AND ENGAGING: With a modular hexagonal board, no two games are the same, offering endless strategic opportunities and replayability.

Age of Empires II uses four technology Ages and includes civilization differences, so there is plenty to explore once the basics feel familiar. That variety is a strength if you enjoy experimenting, but it also means you do not need to learn every civilization or strategy before you can enjoy your first campaign.

When to choose StarCraft II

Choose StarCraft II if a science-fiction setting is what draws you to the genre. Blizzard’s patch notes describe an onboarding choice based on player experience and a beginner tutorial. Its older free-to-play announcement is dated to 2017, so it does not establish which campaigns, modes or restrictions apply today. Check Blizzard’s current game information before deciding based on free access. Read Blizzard’s announcement.

How to make your first RTS session manageable

  1. Use the game’s teaching route. In Age of Empires IV, start with Mission Zero and continue to Art of War; in Age of Empires II, begin with the William Wallace campaign. These are more guided introductions than jumping into a competitive match. Age of Empires IV guide; Age of Empires II guide.
  2. Focus on the basic loop first. Keep workers gathering resources, use those resources to produce units, and learn how technology and unit choices affect combat. You can add more advanced tactics as these actions become familiar.
  3. Set the pace where the game allows it. Use AI skirmish difficulty or campaign difficulty to make practice less punishing. Age of Empires II’s official guide describes adjustable AI levels and recommends lower campaign difficulty for new players. Age of Empires II guide.
  4. Add controls gradually. Hotkeys and control groups can improve efficiency, but Blizzard’s beginner guide says hotkeys are not strictly necessary at the start. Learn a few when you are ready rather than trying to memorize them before your first match. Blizzard’s beginner guide.
  5. Leave multiplayer for when you want it. You can enjoy campaigns and AI practice before deciding whether competitive or cooperative play appeals to you. Age of Empires IV’s official guide presents campaign and multiplayer as alternatives after learning the basics. Age of Empires IV guide.

  • Pick Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition if a historical teaching campaign and adjustable AI practice sound appealing.
  • Pick StarCraft II if you want science fiction and are comfortable checking current access terms rather than assuming older free-to-play details still apply.
