Yes. Microsoft recognized a Bethesda Game Studios union in July 2024, after a majority of the 241 developers in the announced unit supported representation, according to the Communications Workers of America (CWA). The unit spans several job categories in the United States; Montreal workers’ separate recognition filing followed a different process.
When did Bethesda Game Studios workers unionize?
CWA announced Microsoft’s recognition of the union on July 19, 2024. CWA said a majority of the 241 developers in the unit supported representation, either by signing authorization cards or using an online portal. The announcement does not describe a conventional National Labor Relations Board election as the route to recognition. CWA’s announcement called it the first wall-to-wall union at a Microsoft video game studio.
Which workers are included?
The announced unit includes artists, engineers, programmers, and designers. CWA uses “wall-to-wall” to describe a unit spanning job categories rather than representing only one occupation. Workers were assigned to CWA Local 2108 in Maryland and Local 6215 in Texas. CWA’s announcement quotes Mandi Parker, a senior system designer and CWA member, saying: “It is clear that every worker can benefit from bringing democracy into the workplace and securing a protected voice on the job.”
How does the Montreal filing differ?
Bethesda Game Studios workers in Montreal filed for recognition with Quebec’s labor relations board in late June 2024 to be represented by CWA Canada. That was a separate Canadian process; it is not the U.S. recognition Microsoft announced on July 19. CWA’s announcement notes the filing but does not establish its outcome.

Layoff effects bargaining
In a July 29, 2026 update, CWA said committee members from Bethesda Game Studios and other ZeniMax groups met with Microsoft to discuss the effects of layoffs. CWA reported that the committee was negotiating over affected members, including reinstatement. This is the union’s account of the bargaining, not an independent determination of the parties’ legal positions. Read CWA’s update.
September 2026 agreement
On September 14, 2026, CWA District 2-13 announced a “significant agreement” in core effects bargaining involving Bethesda Game Studios, ZeniMax Online Studios, Customer Service/User Research, Content Technology and Operations, and id Software. The announcement concerns bargaining over the effects of layoffs; it does not say Bethesda Game Studios ratified its first collective agreement. Read the district’s announcement.

Has Bethesda ratified a first union contract?
The available sources do not establish whether Bethesda Game Studios has ratified a first collective bargaining agreement as of October 8, 2026. Recognition establishes the union’s status, while effects bargaining addresses the consequences of a specific employer action; neither, by itself, demonstrates that a first contract has been ratified.

Public National Labor Relations Board case pages in 2026 listed open cases involving Bethesda and CWA. A May 7 case page displayed allegations including refusal to bargain in good faith and refusal to furnish information. Cases filed August 10 and September 4 displayed other allegations, including coercive actions and refusal to bargain in good faith. Those are allegations in case records, not findings that the alleged conduct occurred. See the May 7 case page, the August 10 case page, and the September 4 case page.
