How the core play loops differ
Terraria: make your own path through a sandbox
Terraria’s official store description centers on a loop of exploring a randomly generated world, digging for resources, crafting, building, and combat. That makes it the more natural pick if you want to decide where to go and what to make without the game’s premise being organized around interstellar travel.
Its Steam listing describes free content updates, but the store description alone is not a basis for comparing the games’ total playtime, difficulty, or amount of content.
Starbound: use a ship to explore a generated universe
Starbound makes space travel part of its structure: the player has a personal starship and can explore a procedurally generated universe. Its official materials also describe planet colonization and tenants, giving settlement-building a planet-and-colony context alongside crafting and exploration.

#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Starbound also has an explicit story-campaign frame, with quests, characters, bosses, and dungeons listed in its official materials. This is a difference in emphasis, not proof that Terraria has no progression or narrative elements.
Which game suits your building style?
Pick Terraria if you mainly want to construct and alter spaces within a sandbox world as part of your exploration and crafting loop. Pick Starbound if you like the idea of establishing colonies on planets and having a starship as your base for moving between worlds. The official descriptions support this distinction, but do not establish that one game has more building depth or better building tools.

Is Starbound like Terraria?
Yes, in broad terms: both are sandbox games with exploration, crafting, building, combat, co-op, and mod support. The important distinction is the organizing frame. Terraria’s store description emphasizes activities within randomly generated worlds; Starbound’s official materials put those activities in a spacefaring setting with a ship, generated planets, colonies, and a campaign.
Which is better for co-op?
Both are viable choices if online co-op is essential. Steam lists online co-op for each, while Starbound’s presskit specifically describes its content as playable in drop-in/drop-out co-op. The available official descriptions do not establish that one has superior co-op performance or is objectively better for groups.

Terraria’s September 2026 developer update reported that version 1.4.5.7 had released on PC, while console and mobile builds were being submitted. The same update described 1.4.6 as phase one of a planned crossplay rollout, contingent on the other builds being available and stable. That update did not say crossplay was already live. So, should you play Terraria or Starbound?
- Choose Terraria if you want a self-directed loop of exploring, gathering, crafting, building, and combat in randomly generated worlds.
- Choose Starbound if the draw is a starship, planet-to-planet exploration, colonies, and an explicit story-campaign frame.
- Choose based on your group’s setup if co-op or mods are the priority: both support them, but verify platform compatibility, game versions, and mod requirements before you begin.
