No. Steam does not let you transfer a game already in your library to another person as a gift. To give someone ownership, buy a new gift copy; to let an eligible family member play your game, use Steam Families, where ownership remains yours.
What are your options?
| Option | What the other person gets | Who can use it |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Families | Access to eligible games, not ownership | Eligible members of your Steam Family |
| New Steam gift | Ownership after the recipient accepts and redeems it | A recipient permitted by Steam’s title, account, and regional rules |
| Promotional extra copy | A giftable copy, if Steam issued one under a qualifying offer | A recipient you choose, subject to the offer’s conditions |
| Steam Gift Card | Funds to choose and buy a game | The card’s recipient |
Can Steam Families let someone play your copy?
Yes, if the person is a member of your Steam Family and the game is eligible. Steam Families replaced the previous Family Sharing and Family View features. A family can include up to six members, according to Steam’s Steam Families FAQ. The game remains owned by the purchaser, and new purchases appear in that purchaser’s collection.
Which games may not be shareable?
Steam lists exclusions such as games that require a third-party key, account, or subscription; free-to-play games and their purchased DLC; region-restricted titles or DLC; games unsupported on another member’s operating system; titles excluded by their publisher; and games the owner has marked private. Check the game’s eligibility in Steam rather than assuming every library title can be shared.
Can family members play at the same time?
Yes, when the family has enough copies for the games being played. Members can play different games from the family’s shared collection at once. If two people want to play the same title simultaneously, the family needs two copies of that title.

Whose progress and account are used?
Achievements are tied to each player’s own Steam account; save behavior varies by game. Invite only trusted household members, and never share your password. Steam warns that cheating or fraud by a family member while using a shared game can affect family privileges and may result in a VAC ban for the account involved.
How do you give someone ownership?
Buy a new copy through Steam’s Store and select the gift option at checkout. Steam’s gift instructions describe selecting “This is a gift” and choosing a recipient from your Friends List. The instructions say gifts can be scheduled up to 12 months ahead. Once accepted and redeemed, a gift is permanently added to the recipient’s account.

What can prevent a gift?
- The recipient already owns the game, which can make them unavailable to select.
- Regional price differences or other country restrictions may block the purchase.
- DLC generally requires the recipient to own the base game.
- Some bundles are account-specific, and some titles cannot be gifted.
- A delivered gift must be accepted within 30 days or Steam cancels and refunds it.
Steam announced guest checkout and email gifts in July 2025, but checkout options and restrictions can change. The announcement also said email gifts not accepted within 30 days are refunded and that sender and recipient must live in the same country. Confirm the current terms in the Store checkout and Steam’s gift announcement before relying on a particular delivery method.
Does buying the game twice give you a gift copy?
Usually not. Steam says extra copies are not issued in most cases. A limited-time promotion or certain four-pack offers may explicitly include giftable copies; Steam notes an eligible four-pack may provide three extra copies. These offers apply only to the specified games or packages. Check the offer details before purchasing.

Steam’s purchasing FAQ says duplicate purchases on one account do not normally create extra gift copies unless the offer says otherwise. Steam also says eligible extra copies cannot be bought or sold; doing so violates the Steam Subscriber Agreement and can lead to the accounts involved being permanently disabled.
Can you pass along a gift you already redeemed?
No. Once a Steam Gift has been opened and added to a library, it cannot be traded onward. Steam’s Steam Trading FAQ says only never-played extra copies and some older gift purchases can be traded.

Would a Steam Gift Card work instead?
Yes, if you want the recipient to choose what to buy. Steam Gift Cards are available as physical and digital cards and work like store credit for games, software, hardware, and other items sold on Steam, according to Steam’s Gift Cards page. A card funds a new purchase; it does not transfer your existing game license.
