Nintendo supports transferring data between compatible Nintendo 3DS family systems using the built-in System Transfer process. You need both consoles and an internet connection, and the allowed transfer direction depends on the exact models and region. Copying an SD card by itself does not transfer a system or make its copied content usable on another console.
What to check before you start
- Both consoles: Nintendo’s documented self-service process requires the source and target systems to be available.
- Model and direction: Check Nintendo’s guide for the exact pair. A New Nintendo 3DS family system cannot be the source when the target is an original Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL, or Nintendo 2DS.
- Region: Nintendo’s North American guidance requires both systems to be from the same region. Do not assume systems from different regions can transfer between each other.
- Internet and updates: Connect both systems to the internet and install current system updates. Their region settings must match; if you changed a region setting, Nintendo says to launch the eShop at least once before transferring.
- Target-system data and account: A target system with a Nintendo Network ID linked to it cannot receive the transfer until it is formatted to remove that link. Formatting erases data on the target, so preserve anything you need first and read Nintendo’s warnings.
- Time and power: Nintendo recommends connecting both systems to power and says the process can take more than 40 minutes. That is guidance, not a guaranteed completion time.
Use Nintendo’s System Transfer overview and the model-specific transfer instructions for the current prompts. The permitted route depends on the source and target models, so do not infer compatibility from the 3DS family name alone.

What transfers—and what to expect on the target
Nintendo’s transfer information covers system settings, Friend List data, Swapnote data, and save data associated with downloaded DSiWare and Nintendo 3DS software. The process also moves the Nintendo Network ID relationship to the target. The ID is no longer available on the source, and you can relink it on the target.
Downloaded eShop titles remain associated with the Nintendo Network ID. Nintendo does not support merging two IDs, so content tied to separate IDs will not combine into one account. You cannot transfer a single downloaded game by itself; System Transfer moves the system’s supported content as a bundle. Nintendo’s New Nintendo 3DS XL manual puts it plainly: “The data is all transferred at once. You cannot choose which data and software to transfer.”

- Features: 3D Depth Slider, Wi-Fi Capability, Nintendo 3DS Sound, Mii Maker, 3D Camera, Front & Rear Camera, Touch Screen
- Includes: AC Power Adapter, Stylus
- Wired Connectivity: Wireless

Data already on the target may be overwritten. Preinstalled software may need to be redownloaded, and save data for a game on a physical game card is handled differently from saves for downloaded software. Review Nintendo’s transfer details and FAQs before proceeding, especially if there is data on the target you want to keep.
Which transfer method should you use?
Nintendo lists PC-based, wireless, and low-capacity microSD approaches for some transfers to a New Nintendo 3DS system. The available method depends on the model pair and the cards involved. Follow the method Nintendo’s instructions specify for your consoles.
| Method | What it does | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| PC-based | Copies data from the source SD card to the target microSD card as part of the transfer process. | When the applicable model instructions call for it and you have access to a PC and compatible card reader. |
| Wireless | Transfers the required data between the systems without using a PC for the card-copy step. | When Nintendo’s instructions offer it for your model pair and your card capacity makes it suitable. |
| Low-capacity microSD | Moves system data while allowing downloaded content to be redownloaded afterward. | When the relevant instructions support it and the target card cannot accommodate all copied content. |
These are not universal alternatives for every 3DS-to-3DS move. Check the official model-specific steps and card requirements before selecting a route; some methods depend on card type and available storage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why moving or copying the SD card is not enough
Do not treat swapping cards or copying the Nintendo 3DS folder as a substitute for System Transfer. Nintendo warns that copied card content alone will not let you use that content on the new system. The console-to-console transfer is what handles the system migration and account relationship. Card copying is only one part of certain supported methods, not a standalone authorization to play the copied downloads on another console.

Safe order of operations
- Identify the exact source and target models, then open Nintendo’s transfer instructions for that pair.
- Check that both systems meet Nintendo’s region requirements, are updated, and can connect to the internet. If region settings were changed, launch the eShop once on the affected system.
- Review the target for data you want to preserve and check whether a Nintendo Network ID is linked. If formatting is required to remove a linked ID, understand that it erases target data before you proceed.
- Check which card-based method the instructions allow and whether you need a PC, card reader, or additional storage.
- Connect both systems to power, follow the on-screen System Transfer prompts, and let the process complete. Do not substitute a card copy for the console transfer.
- Afterward, link the Nintendo Network ID to the target as directed and redownload software if Nintendo’s instructions require it.
