For tabletop games, the year’s candidate list includes PanzerBlitz, Masterpiece, Ploy, and Buckaroo!; for electronic games, Nintendo’s timeline documents the March release of Computer Othello. These belong to very different kinds of play, so the most useful way to look back is by medium and historical interest—not as a single contest.
What games came out in 1970?
A reference list of 1970 releases covers board and card games, wargames, and miniatures games. It names the following titles, but does not rank them or claim to be exhaustive:
- Buckaroo!
- Game of the Generals
- Masterpiece
- Matchwitz
- PanzerBlitz
- Ploy
- Posse: Thirteen Against One
That list is a starting point for exploring the year, not proof that every title was equally popular, acclaimed, or commercially successful. The source associates these games with 1970; it does not establish their modern edition availability or provide a basis for comparing gameplay quality. The 1970 in games list is the source for these candidates.
Notable tabletop leads
PanzerBlitz is a useful lead for readers interested in historical wargames. Ploy and Masterpiece are other named candidates. These are historical pointers rather than recommendations based on verified ratings, player consensus, or current retail stock.

What video games were released in 1970?
Electronic games in 1970 were not yet a familiar market of home consoles and commercial arcade hits. A historical overview describes video games at the start of the decade as novelties circulating largely among programmers with computer access, including people at research institutions and large companies. It also records that student Christopher Gaylo completed a BASIC game called Highnoon on September 12, 1970, and distributed it through the Huntington Project time-sharing network. This context helps explain why a modern-style “best video games” list is a poor fit for the year. The overview of 1970 in video games is a secondary reference, so its finer-grained historical details should be treated with appropriate caution.
Computer Othello
Nintendo’s company history timeline records that it released Computer Othello in March 1970. The timeline describes it as a simplistic arcade cocktail-table game based on the board game Othello. It is a specific, dated example of electronic play that year—not evidence that it was the year’s definitive or “best” electronic game. Nintendo’s history timeline documents the release.

Finding other arcade-machine records
The Museum of the Game’s catalog lets readers explore amusement machines by name, developer, year, type, genre, rating, and popularity. Its decade index contains 576 entries for video games from the 1970s; that figure covers the decade, not 1970 alone, and says nothing by itself about a game’s quality or sales. Use the catalog to investigate individual machines, while checking each record’s date and type rather than treating the decade total as a year-specific release count. - Historical interest: Look for a documented place in tabletop or early electronic-game history.
- Playability today: Check whether a specific edition or machine can actually be obtained and played; the year lists do not establish current availability.
- Ease of entry: Confirm rules, player count, and complexity from a reliable source before recommending a game to newcomers; those details are not established for the listed candidates here.
- Collectibility: Verify the exact edition and its provenance rather than assuming that an original or reprint is currently for sale.
- Personal preference: Label a selection as your own judgment instead of presenting it as a universal or community ranking.
Tabletop releases and computer or arcade experiments should remain separate when making a comparison: they served different contexts, and the available sources do not support choosing one cross-medium winner. A year-by-year community list can illustrate how subjective personal favorites are, but the visible result is explicitly one user’s selection, not a consensus.
