A critic-list aggregation places The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past first, followed by Street Fighter II, Sonic the Hedgehog, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge and Lemmings. Final Fantasy IV and Another World are also essential picks. The ranking below uses that aggregation as a guide, not as a universal verdict or a measure of sales.
How this 1991 list is ranked
Acclaimed Video Games’ 1991 ranking, updated March 25, 2026, aggregates recommendations from critics’ lists. It reports 913 lists across 142 publications and ranks the games by how often they appear. That method makes it a useful basis for a shortlist, but it is not a player poll, a sales chart or an objective measure of quality. GamesRadar+’s retrospective offers a separate historical perspective on several of the same titles.
Here, “of 1991” means a game identified with that year in the ranking, rather than a claim that it launched everywhere in the world during 1991. Regional release dates and titles sometimes differ.
The best games of 1991
1. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
The ranking’s top pick is an SNES action-adventure built around exploration, combat and a world that opens up as Link gains abilities. GamesRadar+ highlights its interconnected world, careful pacing and light-and-dark-world mechanic. It is the strongest all-around choice if you want a substantial adventure rather than a quick arcade session.

Why the year can depend on where you lived
Console launch dates and game releases were not simultaneous across regions. The Super NES arrived in North America in 1991, while Nintendo’s timeline places its European launch in June 1992 and the European arrival of A Link to the Past in 1992. For North American context, HISTORY’s account of the system’s U.S. debut is useful; for Europe, see Nintendo’s company timeline. A year attached to a game may describe its first release in one territory rather than every market.
