The best Sonic game depends on the kind of speed and platforming you want. For classic 16-bit action, start with Sonic the Hedgehog 2; for a modern take on that style, choose Sonic Mania. Sonic Generations bridges 2D and 3D, while Sonic Frontiers takes the series into action-adventure territory. These are recommendations by play style, not an official ranking from SEGA.
Which Sonic game should you play first?
Use this shortlist to match a game to the experience you want. The order reflects a practical starting point, not a universal verdict: GamesRadar+’s June 23, 2026 ranking is one publication’s editorial list, and it places Sonic the Hedgehog 2 first, Sonic CD second, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles third. GamesRadar+’s ranking is useful context, but personal preference and play style matter more than a single list.

Best classic Sonic game: Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the clearest pick if you want the familiar 16-bit recipe: side-scrolling stages built around momentum, speed, platforming, and exploration. It is also the top-ranked game in GamesRadar+’s June 2026 list, which credits it with helping establish the series’ formula. That ranking is a critic publication’s judgment, not a SEGA designation or proof that every player will prefer it.
Best expanded classic adventure: Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Choose Sonic 3 & Knuckles if you want a broader classic-era experience and value characters who play differently. GamesRadar says the two releases work best in tandem; together, they make a fuller adventure than treating either half as the entire experience. If you are choosing a current edition or platform, check exactly what the listing includes rather than assuming every release packages both games identically.

Best modern 2D Sonic: Sonic Mania
Sonic Mania is the recommendation for players who want classic side-scrolling without limiting themselves to a simple reissue. SEGA describes it as the latest title in its classic 2D side-scrolling action series, and its official product description says the game reworks familiar stages and adds original ones. That makes it a natural fit if the older 16-bit approach appeals but you also want new level content. SEGA’s Sonic Mania page provides the publisher’s description.
Best blend of 2D and 3D: Sonic Generations
Sonic Generations is the best fit here if you want to sample two recognizable Sonic styles in one game. Its structure deliberately pairs classic side-scrolling levels with modern 3D-style stages, rather than asking you to choose one approach for the entire adventure. On the Metacritic page reviewed for this guide, it has a 77 Metascore from 49 critic reviews; that is a snapshot tied to the page’s version and platform, not a comparable score for every Sonic game or edition. Metacritic’s Sonic Generations page shows its review information.
Best action-adventure change of pace: Sonic Frontiers
Sonic Frontiers is for players open to a departure from the series’ traditional stage-by-stage platforming. SEGA describes two selectable control styles: one oriented toward accessible platforming and another toward high-speed action. The shift in structure is the point of the recommendation, but reception is not unanimous: the reviewed Metacritic page shows mixed critic reactions. Treat it as an alternative for a different kind of Sonic adventure, not the uncontested best entry. SEGA’s Sonic Frontiers page describes its play-style options; Metacritic’s Sonic Frontiers page records critic reception.
Rank #2
- A new Spin on a Classic: You've never played classic Sonic like this before!
- Multiply, swim up waterfalls, change form, and more with the powers of the Chaos Emeralds.
- lay as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose, using their unique abilities to explore and uncover new paths and secrets.
- More Friends, More Fun: Play with up to 3 other players in local Co-op and challenge players from around the world in Battle Mode!
Optional historical pick: Sonic Adventure
If you are curious about Sonic’s first major 3D era, Sonic Adventure is a useful historical choice. GamesRadar’s June 2026 list places it ninth and identifies its original Dreamcast release as 1998. Pick it to explore that transition in the series rather than because it is the easiest recommendation for every newcomer.
How to choose a Sonic game
- Want the classic formula? Start with Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
- Want a longer classic-style experience? Look for Sonic 3 & Knuckles with both releases included.
- Want 2D Sonic with newly made content? Choose Sonic Mania.
- Want to compare side-scrolling and 3D stages? Choose Sonic Generations.
- Want a more open-ended action-adventure structure? Try Sonic Frontiers.
- Want to see the franchise’s early 3D direction? Consider Sonic Adventure.
Platforms, editions, and release details to check
Availability depends on the particular release and region, so verify the platform, package contents, and compatibility on the listing you plan to buy. SEGA release information documents standard package editions of Sonic x Shadow Generations for PS5 and Nintendo Switch. It also documents a physical Nintendo Switch 2 release of Sonic Frontiers – Definitive Edition scheduled for September 17, 2026. These details do not establish current regional stock or retailer pricing. SEGA’s release information covers those editions and release details.
Sales figures are not a measure of which game is best. SEGA Sammy Holdings reported 1.66 billion Sonic series sales and downloads in 2024; its corporate timeline footnote includes free-to-play downloads, so the figure is not paid game units or unique players. SEGA Corporation reported 5 million Sonic Frontiers units sold worldwide as of August 14, 2026, counting physical units and digital downloads across platforms. SEGA Sammy Holdings’ corporate timeline and investor materials provide the broader series figure, while SEGA’s announcement gives the Frontiers figure.
