There is no one fix for every BioShock PC crash. Start by identifying whether you have the original BioShock or BioShock Remastered, then match troubleshooting to the crash timing, Windows version, and any error message or faulting module. The official guidance covers particular cases—not a universal cure.
Identify your edition and crash
The original game and BioShock Remastered are separate PC releases with separate support information. Check the title in your launcher before changing settings; Steam lists different support pages for the original game and Remastered.
Before troubleshooting, note:
- Which edition you own and which launcher or store you use.
- Your Windows version and build.
- When the crash happens: on launch, while loading, during gameplay, or when saving or loading.
- Any exact error message, error code, or named faulting module.
Those details matter: a legacy Windows 7 crash naming OLEAUT32.dll has a specific 2K recommendation, while a different symptom cannot be diagnosed from that advice alone.
Apply the fix only if the crash matches
Original BioShock on Windows 7 with OLEAUT32.dll
For the specific original-game Windows 7 crash whose faulting module is OLEAUT32.dll, 2K Support recommends running Bioshock.exe in Windows Vista Service Pack 2 compatibility mode. Its FAQ says: “The solution is to navigate into the Steam files, find the Bioshock.exe and run it in compatibility mode for Vista SP 2. Running it in compatibility mode for any other version of Windows has no effect.” See 2K’s BioShock FAQ.

That instruction is limited to the described Windows 7 fault. It is not a general fix for Windows 10 or Windows 11, Remastered, or crashes with a different signature.
BioShock Remastered prerequisites
Steam’s Remastered requirements list DirectX 11 and Visual C++ 2010 and 2012 packages, along with hardware and storage requirements. Compare your system with that edition’s requirements and confirm the listed dependencies are present. Requirements identify what the game expects; they do not guarantee a crash will be fixed. Avoid downloading individual DLL files from unofficial sites.

Use 2K’s current troubleshooting resources
If your crash does not match the narrow Windows 7 case, use the 2K PC support section to find general crash and freeze troubleshooting, Windows 11 compatibility guidance, and instructions for collecting DXDiag and MSinfo files. These are general support resources, not a BioShock-specific cure.

- Edition, launcher, Windows version and build.
- Hardware and graphics details.
- When the crash occurs and the exact error text or faulting module.
- Steps you have already tried and whether they changed the symptom.
- DXDiag or MSinfo files if requested by support.
Optional legacy experiments for the original game
A Steam Community guide, posted in 2014 and updated in 2019, suggests disabling Steam Overlay, trying the launch option -nointro, or using compatibility troubleshooting for some original-game startup problems on Windows 7 or 8. The guide is user-authored, limited in age and scope, and notes that crashes may persist; treat these as optional experiments rather than official fixes. See the community guide.
- Change only one setting at a time so you can tell whether it affects the original symptom.
- If testing
-nointro, add it as a launch option in the game’s launcher settings, then try the same startup sequence that previously crashed. - To test the overlay suggestion, disable Steam Overlay for the game and repeat that sequence.
- If the crash is unchanged, undo the test and move on to the applicable official support route.
These suggestions are for the original game and the guide’s legacy Windows scope; they are not established remedies for Remastered or current Windows versions.
