There is no definitive ranking of the best indie games: “indie” can describe different kinds of development and publishing, and players value different things. This guide uses originality, craft, influence, reach, reception, and lasting relevance to select eight acclaimed standouts—without pretending that separate editorial lists add up to a universal score. The result is a genre-spanning guide to what each game offers and who is most likely to enjoy it.
What makes an indie game one of the best?
Independence is not a perfectly fixed label, and “best” depends partly on what you want to play. PC Gamer’s guide, for example, organizes indie games across very different categories, from open-world adventures to Metroidvanias and relaxing games. Rather than rank unlike experiences with a made-up scoring formula, the selections below weigh originality, execution, lasting influence, player reach, critical reception, and continued relevance. These are editorial standouts, not a definitive consensus list.
Eight standout indie games, and what they offer
| Game | Genre and play | What stands out | Best fit for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stardew Valley | Farming and life simulation, with exploration, crafting, fishing, and optional multiplayer | A solo-developed game that grew into a broad, welcoming routine of farm work and community life | Players who want flexible goals, relationships, and a game to settle into |
| Hollow Knight | Exploration-focused action-adventure | A large world where discovery and exploration guide progression | Players who enjoy finding their own way through a challenging world |
| Celeste | Precision platformer | Hand-crafted movement and demanding platforming centered on Madeline’s climb | Players seeking focused, skill-based levels |
| Hades | Roguelike action | Story and character conversations develop between runs | Players who want fast action paired with an unfolding narrative |
| Undertale | Role-playing game | A distinctive RPG that appears in all-time indie selections | Players looking for a story-led alternative to conventional RPG expectations |
| Shovel Knight | 2D platformer | A crowdfunded platform game with a clear focus on classic-style action | Players who want a direct, platforming-centered adventure |
| Cuphead | Run-and-gun action | Its early-animation-inspired visual style gives its action a singular identity | Players drawn to demanding action and distinctive visual craft |
| The Stanley Parable | Interactive drama | Its choices examine the relationship between player, creator, and story | Players interested in narrative experiments more than conventional action |
The genre descriptions and editorial recognition here draw on official game material and published selections from PC Gamer and Logitech G. Those lists support the games as noteworthy candidates, but they do not establish a shared ranking or comparable scores.
Why these games endure
Stardew Valley: a personal project with broad appeal
Stardew Valley combines farming with relationships, fishing, crafting, and cave exploration, letting players decide how to spend their time. Its origins are unusually well documented: creator Eric Barone says on the official press page that he developed the game on his own over four years and taught himself the skills behind its music, art, programming, and design. It released on PC on February 26, 2016. The same page reports more than 41 million copies sold across platforms as of December 2024, including more than 26 million PC copies and 7.9 million Nintendo Switch copies. These are dated figures, not 2026 totals.

Hollow Knight: exploration as the reward
Team Cherry’s 2017 action-adventure makes exploration central: its large world invites players to look for routes, places, and discoveries rather than follow a narrowly guided path. It suits players who enjoy learning a world through movement and combat, though that exploratory approach is a different proposition from the structured levels of Celeste.
Celeste: precision platforming with a clear goal
Celeste focuses on difficult, carefully made platforming as Madeline climbs Celeste Mountain. Its official website describes it as “a super-tight, hand-crafted platformer from the creators of TowerFall.” The site links to PC and console storefronts; check the current listing for the platform and edition you want.
Rank #2
Hades: action runs that move the story forward
Supergiant Games’ Hades combines roguelike action with a story that advances through conversations between attempts. Released in 2020 after an Early Access period, it gives repeated runs a narrative purpose: returning to the action also means meeting characters and learning more about the world. PC Gamer and Logitech G both include it in their indie-game coverage.
Undertale: an RPG with a lasting place in indie lists
Toby Fox’s 2015 role-playing game is a regular presence among notable indie selections, including Logitech G’s all-time list. It offers a story-led change of pace from games built around exploration, platforming, or repeated action runs.

Shovel Knight and Cuphead: two different kinds of action
These games demonstrate how much range “action indie game” can cover. Shovel Knight is a crowdfunded 2D platformer; Cuphead is a run-and-gun game whose visual language draws on early animation styles. Logitech G includes both in its all-time selection. One emphasizes platforming, the other shooting and boss-focused action, so they are not interchangeable recommendations.
The Stanley Parable: a game about choice and authorship
The Stanley Parable uses interactive drama to put the act of choosing—and the relationship between player and creator—at the center. Logitech G highlights it as a notable indie game. It is the most distinct pick here for players curious about how games tell stories and respond to decisions, rather than seeking a conventional combat challenge.

Where to find the games
Platforms and store editions can change, so verify the current listing before buying. ConcernedApe’s official Stardew Valley press material includes Nintendo Switch among the game’s platforms. The official Celeste website links to several PC and console storefronts. Those official pages establish platform availability, not current retailer stock, pricing, or a particular physical edition.
