Can You Hide NSFW Games on Your Steam Profile?

Steam’s Mark as Private setting hides an individual game’s ownership and activity from other users. Library Hide only removes it from your own view.

Yes. Use Steam’s per-game Mark as Private setting to hide a specific game from other users’ profile views and activity. Don’t use Hide this game in your Library for this purpose: that setting hides the game from your own Steam Client view.

How to hide one game from your Steam profile

Steam Support documents three ways to mark a game as private. Menu placement can change; if the labels differ, consult Steam’s current Private Games instructions.

  1. In the Steam Client: Open the game’s Manage submenu by right-clicking the game in your Library or selecting the gear icon on its details page, then choose the privacy option. Steam also lists the control in the game’s properties under Privacy. The client must be online and connected to Steam for the option to be available.
  2. In a browser: Open your Steam Community profile’s games list and mark the game private there.
  3. Before buying: Mark the game private from the shopping cart before completing the purchase.

What “Mark as Private” changes

Steam Support says marking a game private hides your ownership, in-game status, playtime, and activity in that game. To other users, it generally appears as if you do not own it. Steam says the game is removed from your profile’s games list and recently played section; friends won’t see its usual in-game status or activity feed items, and profile showcases won’t display the game or its achievements. Steam also describes effects on store friend-ownership displays, gifting, Steam Trading Cards, and local-network game transfers. See Steam Support’s explanation of private games for the full behavior.

Private versus hidden in your Library

Steam describes Library Hide as preventing a game from appearing to you. It is an organizational setting, not a substitute for the per-game privacy control.

What private status does not hide

Private does not guarantee that nobody can identify what you are playing in every multiplayer situation. Steam says players on the same server can see your Steam ID in games using Steam matchmaking. A friend invited to join a private game can see your in-game status until you leave the game or disconnect from Steam.

Per-game privacy versus profile privacy

Steam’s profile-wide privacy settings are a separate layer. Steam lists Public, Friends Only, and Private states, with additional profile subcategories; these settings affect profile visibility more broadly. If you want to hide one game while keeping other profile information visible, use the per-game Mark as Private option. See Steam’s profile privacy guidance.
