For the original BioShock, choose Medium if you have played shooters before, Easy if you are new to them, and Hard if you are an experienced player looking for a tougher fight. Survivor is the most demanding, resource-conscious option. The trilogy uses different difficulty labels, though, so first check which game you are starting.

Which BioShock game are you playing?

The original BioShock, BioShock 2, and BioShock Infinite do not share one identical difficulty scale. The recommendations below follow the guidance in each game’s manual; they are starting points, not a claim that one setting is best for every player.

Original BioShock: match the setting to your shooter experience

The original BioShock manual describes its four choices in terms of prior shooter experience and challenge:

Setting Manual’s description Who should consider it
Easy “You’re new to shooters.” Players who are new to shooters or want a gentler combat experience.
Medium “You’ve played other shooters.” A reasonable starting point if you already have some shooter experience.
Hard “You’ve played a LOT of shooters.” Experienced players who want more challenge.
Survivor “Every bullet counts.” Players who want the most demanding, resource-conscious option.

If you are unsure, Medium is the practical default for someone familiar with shooters; move down to Easy if combat gets in the way of enjoying the game, or choose Hard if you want a more substantial challenge. Survivor is not simply another experience-based recommendation: its manual wording signals a stricter approach to resources.

BioShock 2: consider achievement or trophy requirements

BioShock 2 offers Easy, Medium, and Hard, but the right choice depends on whether you are prioritizing a comfortable playthrough or a specified achievement or trophy. The BioShock 2 manual says its listed Games for Windows – LIVE achievements require Hard. The BioShock: The Collection manual says BioShock 2 trophies require Hard. Those requirements are tied to the cited platform or edition documentation; check the requirements for your own release before choosing a lower setting.

BioShock Infinite: Easy, Normal, Hard, or 1999 Mode

The BioShock Infinite manual gives experience-based guidance for its standard settings:

Rank #2
BioShock: The Collection
  • Category: Miscellaneous Compilation
  • Content Rating: Graphic Violence, Drug Reference, Intense Violence, Sexual Content, Strong Language, Alcohol and Tobacco Use
  • Origin: United States
  • Easy: A starting point if you are not very experienced with FPS games.
  • Normal: The manual’s suggested fit if you have some FPS experience and know the basics.
  • Hard: For long-time FPS players seeking a challenge.

It also lists 1999 Mode, described as the hardest setting. The manual says it unlocks by completing the game or using a secret code. It further notes that difficulty can be changed through Options during play, but changing it may affect achievements. If achievements matter to you, verify the rules for your specific edition before adjusting the setting.

A quick way to decide

  • New to shooters: Start on Easy in the original or Infinite.
  • Some shooter experience: Start on Medium in the original or Normal in Infinite.
  • Experienced and seeking a tougher run: Try Hard; in the original game, Survivor is the resource-strict alternative.
  • Playing BioShock 2 for achievements or trophies: Check your platform and edition’s requirements, since the cited manuals specify Hard for particular lists.

These manuals provide qualitative guidance rather than measured comparisons of how much harder each setting is. Their recommendations also may not cover every modern platform, remaster, patch, or achievement set.
