If BioShock 2 crashes, freezes, or will not launch on PC, first confirm whether you own the original BioShock 2 or BioShock 2 Remastered: they are separate editions with different published system requirements. Then work through the checks below in order, starting with reversible steps. These are general PC and Steam troubleshooting tests recommended by 2K, not guaranteed fixes for a particular BioShock 2 crash.
1. Confirm the edition and check its requirements
Check the game name in your Steam Library before applying advice. The original and Remastered releases have separate Steam listings; do not assume a requirement or edition-specific instruction for one applies to the other.

These are storefront requirements, not a promise that the game will run on every current PC or configuration. If your system falls short of the listing for your edition, note that before spending time on software fixes.
2. Verify the Steam game files
Damaged or missing installation files are a practical early check. 2K’s Steam troubleshooting instructions say Steam compares local files with cloud files and repairs errors it finds.

- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the BioShock 2 edition that is crashing and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the check to finish, then try launching the game again.
2K’s Steam troubleshooting guide provides these steps. Verification is a check and repair attempt, not a guarantee that every crash has an installation cause.
3. Clear the launcher cache
2K recommends clearing the launcher cache as an early troubleshooting step because temporary launcher files can become corrupt or unnecessary. Follow the current cache-clearing instructions for the launcher you use; do not delete folders based on a cache path intended for another launcher or game.
After clearing the cache, restart the launcher and test BioShock 2. 2K’s PC general troubleshooting guide links this as a general troubleshooting measure.

4. Update your graphics driver from its maker
An outdated graphics driver can affect stability, compatibility, or launch behavior. Check the official driver support page for your GPU maker—NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel—and install an appropriate update if one is available. Restart the PC if the installer requests it, then test the same edition again.

5. Check Windows Update
Use Windows Update to check for available system updates and install them if appropriate. Restart when prompted, then see whether the problem changes. 2K includes Windows updates among its general PC troubleshooting steps; this is system maintenance advice, not a BioShock 2 game patch.

6. Isolate overlays and other background apps
Background software can interfere with a game or its launcher. 2K identifies VPNs, antivirus or other security software, firewalls, and overlays such as Steam or Discord as possible sources of interference. Test one item at a time so you can tell whether a change matters.

- If there is no change, restore that app and test a different item rather than disabling everything at once.
- If security software appears to block the game, use an appropriate exception for the game or launcher instead of leaving protection disabled.
- Restore normal protections and settings after the test.
These are isolation tests, not confirmation that any listed program caused your crash. 2K discusses potential interference in its PC and Steam troubleshooting guides.

7. Test without mods or connected controllers
Temporarily remove or disable user-created mods, then test the game in an unmodded state. 2K notes that mod compatibility is not verified. If the game still fails, reconnect or re-enable your usual setup after the test.
You can also unplug connected controllers and try launching or playing with keyboard and mouse. This checks for a possible peripheral conflict; it does not establish that a controller is the cause. 2K includes both mods and controllers among its Steam troubleshooting checks.

Reinstalling takes more time than the checks above, so leave it until simpler steps have not helped. 2K says a reinstall may refresh corrupt files and provide updates when clearing the cache does not resolve the issue. It is not a guaranteed cure. Use your launcher’s uninstall and install controls, and confirm which edition you are reinstalling.

If the crash continues, record the information that can help support understand the failure:
- The exact error message, if one appears, and whether the game crashes, freezes, or fails during startup.
- Whether the affected game is the original or Remastered, and which launcher you use.
- When the problem occurs and any recent changes to drivers, Windows, software, mods, or peripherals.
- Which troubleshooting steps you tried and what changed after each one.
- System reports such as DxDiag and MSinfo, which 2K support may request.
