Biomutant is not as bad as its weakest reviews suggest, but it is an uneven open-world action RPG. Its colorful post-apocalyptic world, strange weapon crafting and flexible combat are real draws; a forgettable story, narrator-heavy dialogue and repetitive quests are the main drawbacks. It is a better fit for players who enjoy exploration and experimentation than for those seeking a tightly paced story.
What kind of game is Biomutant?
Biomutant is a single-player, open-world post-apocalyptic Kung-Fu fable RPG developed by Experiment 101 and published by THQ Nordic. It released on May 25, 2021, according to Steam.
Its play revolves around combining melee attacks, ranged weapons and mutation abilities while exploring a colorful world. You can customize your character and assemble weapons from interchangeable parts, producing unusual combinations rather than sticking to a conventional arsenal. What do the reviews say?
GameSpot reviewer Richard Wakeling scored the game 6/10 in a review published May 24, 2021. He praised the distinctive setting, bizarre crafted weapons and combat that can be enjoyable in short bursts, while criticizing the forgettable story, formulaic missions and fighting that can settle into repetitive routines. His summary was: “Biomutant presents a different take on the post-apocalypse, but a forgettable story and uneven gameplay hold it back.” (GameSpot’s review.)

The presentation is part of the divide. Characters speak in gibberish translated by a narrator, an unusual device that can give the world character but also makes conversations feel less immediate. If you like frequent narration and can tolerate repeated tasks, the game’s exploration and combat experiments may carry you through. If dialogue, pacing and quest variety are central to your enjoyment, the same design choices are more likely to frustrate.
Does the version you choose matter?
Yes. The reviews do not describe one identical experience across every platform. The 2024 Nintendo Switch reviews preserve the broader split—praising combat, enemy and weapon variety, and the scope of the port, while criticizing visual quality, textures, narrator pacing and repetitive quests. In its September 6, 2022 announcement, publisher THQ Nordic listed selectable modes for the current-generation console versions. These are publisher-announced targets, not independent performance-test results:

These specifications come from THQ Nordic’s console-release announcement. The publisher also said owners of PS4 and Xbox One versions could upgrade for free and transfer saves and trophies or achievements. A physical PS4 disc cannot be used to upgrade on a PS5 that has no disc drive, so check your console and copy before relying on that offer.

Who is Biomutant for?
- Consider it if you enjoy exploring colorful open worlds, customizing a character, building odd weapons and trying different approaches to combat.
- Be cautious if you want a compelling, tightly delivered story, restrained narration or quests that stay varied throughout.
- Choose with the platform in mind: the Switch-specific visual criticism matters if you are shopping for that port; PS5 and Xbox Series X/S have the announced mode choices listed above.
That is why a single score does not settle whether it is worth playing. The strongest case for Biomutant is its distinctive style and systems; the weakest is its storytelling and repetition. The PlayStation US listing identifies a PS4/PS5 edition and a Mercenary Class add-on. The official game site links to its Standard Edition and retailers, including Amazon; check the current platform, region, stock and edition before buying.
