What you can and can’t do offline
Elden Ring separates its single-player mode from online play. Steam lists the game as having single-player, online PvP, and online co-op modes. Playing offline lets you explore and progress through the solo game, but it disconnects you from the online multiplayer and community features described by the platform stores.

Steam’s ELDEN RING listing identifies the available play modes; PlayStation’s listing and Xbox’s listing describe the game’s online features.
Do you need internet to play Elden Ring?
Not for the single-player experience once the game is installed and your platform can verify its license for offline use. Internet access may still be needed to download the game or updates, prepare a digital license, or connect to online features. Digital access rules are platform-specific, so no single offline-launch guarantee applies to every account or copy.

If you plan to play without a connection, install and launch the game while online first, then check your console or PC platform’s own offline-use and license settings. This is practical platform guidance, not a universal Elden Ring requirement.

Bandai Namco’s version 1.17 patch notes, dated August 27, 2026, cover PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam and state that the update is required for online play. This can affect reconnecting to multiplayer; it does not establish that offline solo play requires an internet connection.

Can you play without PlayStation Plus or an Xbox subscription?
For offline single-player, the cited store pages do not establish a requirement for PlayStation Plus or an Xbox Game Pass subscription. Xbox explicitly ties its Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate requirement to console online multiplayer. PlayStation says a PlayStation account is required for online features, not that a subscription is required for offline solo play.
These statements concern online multiplayer requirements, not every platform’s digital-license rules. Check the current store terms and your account’s offline settings if you are unsure whether your copy will launch without a connection.
What to do if the game won’t connect when you go back online
Online play may require the current game update. Bandai Namco’s version 1.17 notes say the update is required for online play and note that platform regulation files may be downloaded by logging in. Reconnect to the internet, let the game and platform download available updates, then try online features again.
