Yes—if your PS5 has a disc drive, it can play DVD movies. Insert the DVD; the Disc Player appears on the media home, where you can start playback. Not every PS5 has a drive, and compatibility depends on the console model.
Which PS5 models can play DVD movies?
A PS5 with an installed disc drive supports DVD movie playback. The original CFI-1000 model-group PS5 Digital Edition has no disc drive and does not support disc-based games or media.

Sony identifies its separately sold CFI-ZDD1 series disc drive as compatible with CFI-2000 model-group PS5 Digital Edition consoles and consoles from the CFI-7000 model group. Check the model group printed on your console before buying an add-on; the CFI-ZDD1 is not listed for the original CFI-1000 Digital Edition.
How to play a DVD on PS5
- Insert the DVD into the console’s disc slot.
- If playback does not begin automatically, open Disc Player from the media home.
- Select the movie to begin playback.
PlayStation Support says: “To play a Blu-ray Disc™ or DVD, insert the disc into the disc slot. Disc Player appears on your media home, and playback can begin.” Sony’s instructions for playing discs give the same steps.

DVD formats supported by PS5
Sony lists these DVD formats as supported:
- DVD-ROM
- DVD-R and DVD-RW, in video mode or VR mode
- DVD+R and DVD+RW
Sony’s format notes say AVCHD is supported for the listed recordable formats, and CPRM is supported for DVD-R/RW in VR mode. The CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive Instruction Manual also lists DVD-ROM, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, and AVCHD among playable discs for that drive.
When a DVD may not work
PS5 does not support DVDs that have not been finalized. Sony also notes that scratches, dust, recording quality, and the recording device can affect playback. Some discs may therefore fail even if their format is listed as supported; Sony says rare DVD playback failures can result from manufacturing or encoding variations.
- Check that the disc is clean and free of visible damage.
- For a home-recorded DVD, confirm that the disc was finalized.
- Confirm that the disc’s format is on Sony’s supported list.
DVD movies are not the same as PlayStation game discs
DVD movie support does not mean every PlayStation game disc works on PS5. The CFI-ZDD1 manual says PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3 format software cannot be played from a disc. Sony’s PS5: The Ultimate FAQ separately states: “The PS5 console version with a Blu-ray disc drive supports video playback from 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs, standard Blu-rays, and DVDs.”
