Balatro’s 2024 Game Awards nomination brought the game to the attention of some people who had not heard of it—and its “poker game” label can make its real appeal easy to miss. Familiar poker hands are only the starting point: Jokers and other scoring modifiers turn each run into a changing deck-building puzzle.
What Balatro was nominated for at The Game Awards 2024
Balatro was nominated in four categories at The Game Awards 2024: Game of the Year, Game Direction, Best Independent Game, and Best Debut Indie Game. It won Best Debut Indie Game, according to Xbox Wire’s December 12, 2024 recap. The earlier Xbox Wire nominee roundup, published November 18, lists all four nominations.

Why the “poker game” label can be misleading
Poker hands are the starting language
Balatro uses recognizable hands—pairs, straights, flushes, and four of a kind—as the basis for play. But it is not ordinary poker: the game layers scoring changes and other special-card effects onto those hands, so poker knowledge alone does not explain how to build a successful run.
Jokers and modifiers change the puzzle
Jokers can reshape a run’s strategy, while other special cards alter scoring. Players have to adapt their choices to the combinations and effects available in that run, rather than rely on one fixed approach. Apple’s App Store feature on Balatro+ says the game includes over 150 special cards and describes its runs as calls for new combinations.

A distinct inspiration behind the game
Apple identifies LocalThunk as a Canada-based solo developer and says the game draws inspiration from Big Two, a Cantonese card game. The same feature says LocalThunk worked on the gameplay loop for two and a half years. That background helps explain why Balatro’s familiar poker vocabulary does not tell the whole story of how it plays.

In one Reddit discussion, a commenter said, “I had the same sort of reaction except I hadn’t even heard of it before it was nominated.” Another described initially seeing it as a poker game, then realizing it was a deck-building game. Those comments illustrate how nomination coverage and the game’s label shaped a couple of players’ expectations; they are anecdotes, not evidence of a broad trend.

The distinction matters: the available sources do not quantify how many people discovered Balatro because of its nomination, or establish nomination-driven growth in players, sales, or searches. What they do show is why the discovery can be surprising for an individual newcomer: the recognizable hands suggest one kind of game, while the changing Jokers and scoring effects lead somewhere more strategic and variable.
