To stop Mystic Carrion from resurrecting, destroy the heart jar inside Thrumbo before killing Carrion at Philgrave’s Mansion. Find and read Funerary Jar Form and Function in the Ancient Lair, tell Thrumbo what you learned, then destroy the jar he expels. Carrion’s other organ jars can make the fight easier, but only the heart is required for a permanent defeat.
How to make Mystic Carrion stay dead
- Reach the Ancient Lair. Find it in the Undercity Ruins, accessed from the Lower City Sewers.
- Read Funerary Jar Form and Function. The book is in a hidden workshop in the lair. It reveals that Carrion’s heart is inside Thrumbo and unlocks the relevant conversation.
- Tell Thrumbo what you found. Thrumbo will expel the heart jar, making it possible to destroy it.
- Destroy the heart jar. You can attack it from range; keep party members and nearby NPCs well away from the blast.
- Return to Philgrave’s Mansion and kill Mystic Carrion. With the heart destroyed, Carrion cannot use it to resurrect after a long rest.
Which jars should you destroy?
The heart is mandatory for the permanent outcome. Carrion’s brain, liver, and lungs are optional targets that remove specific advantages. Decide whether their combat benefits are worth the extra exploration and exposure to the lair’s hazards.
| Jar | Effect while intact | Effect of destroying it | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heart | Carrion can resurrect after a long rest if the heart remains intact. | Prevents that return after you defeat him. | Required for a permanent defeat. |
| Brain | Grants Carrion +3 spell save DC and prevents him from being surprised. | Removes those benefits. | Optional; useful if you want to reduce spell pressure and enable surprise. |
| Liver | Prevents Carrion from being vulnerable to fire. | Makes fire a more useful damage choice against him. | Optional; especially useful for a fire-focused party. |
| Lungs | Prevents Carrion from being silenced. | Removes that protection, allowing silence to affect him. | Optional; useful if your tactics rely on silence. |
Handle the jars safely
Destroying an organ jar causes an 8d6 fire-damage explosion, according to the community-maintained bg3.wiki Mystic Carrion guide. Attack jars from a distance and make sure your party, NPCs, and vulnerable surroundings are outside the blast area. If several jars are close together, detonating them from a safe position may also damage nearby enemies, but the outcome depends on their placement and the encounter setup.
The Ancient Lair has hazards: interacting with chests or opening the secret door can apply Spell Rot and raise undead. The guide reports that lockpicking the door without opening it avoids that trigger. Trap behavior may vary by game version, so use caution rather than assuming every interaction is safe.

Prepare for the fight at Philgrave’s Mansion
Mystic Carrion is an undead mummy lord who can summon Ancient Servants. His defenses and health can vary with difficulty, so do not rely on a single profile as universal. The wiki describes magic resistance and immunity to poison and necrotic damage; it also lists resistance to nonmagical physical damage on Balanced difficulty. Check the current encounter and difficulty settings rather than assuming those physical defenses apply on every mode.
- Avoid poison and necrotic damage: Carrion is listed as immune to both.
- Account for magic resistance: Spell effects may be harder to land; removing the brain jar also removes its spell-save-DC bonus.
- Use fire strategically: Destroy the liver jar first if you want Carrion to become vulnerable to fire.
- Consider silence: Destroying the lungs jar removes his protection against being silenced.
- Watch for summoned undead: Carrion can call Ancient Servants into the fight, so keep the rest of the battlefield in mind while focusing him.
Do not confuse the Torch of Revocation with the heart
The Torch of Revocation is a separate quest concern connected to Free the Artist. It is not the condition that stops Mystic Carrion from resurrecting. For the permanent-kill sequence, the key is to destroy the heart jar Thrumbo expels before the final fight.
