There is no single box color that is always correct in Blue Prince. Solve the Parlor puzzle from the clues shown in your current run: exactly one box holds the prize, and among the blue, white, and black boxes, at least one must have only true statements and at least one must have only false statements. Test each possible prize location against those rules, then open the sole assignment that fits.
What are the Three Box puzzle rules?
Each of the Parlor’s blue, white, and black boxes displays written statements. Only one box contains the prize; the other two are empty. The room’s rules also require at least one box whose statements are all true and at least one whose statements are all false, as described in Shacknews’ April 10, 2025 walkthrough. These rules describe the puzzle, not a direct developer quotation.

A box with a mixture of true and false statements is mixed: it is neither an all-true box nor an all-false box. Player discussion on Steam Community corroborates this interpretation; the discussion is not an official rulebook.
How to solve the puzzle in your run
- Copy the clues exactly. Label each statement by its box—blue, white, or black—and preserve words such as “all,” “other,” and “this.”
- Try each prize location. First assume the blue box has the prize, then repeat for white and black. For each assumption, evaluate every statement as true or false based on that proposed location.
- Reject impossible prize assignments. An assignment is invalid if it makes more than one box contain the prize or leaves all three empty.
- Check the whole-box rules. In a surviving assignment, at least one box’s statements must all be true, and at least one other box’s statements must all be false. A mixed box does not count toward either requirement, though its individual clues still need to be evaluated.
- Choose the sole assignment that passes. If none does, recheck the exact wording and whether you evaluated a compound statement as a whole. If more than one seems to pass, revisit the truth values and the one-prize condition.
Worked example: why the black box wins in one published clue set
In the example reported by Shacknews, the blue box says, “All three boxes contain gems”; the white box says, “The other two boxes contain gems”; and the black box says, “This box contains gems.”

The room allows only one prize box, so the blue and white claims cannot be true: each says that multiple boxes contain gems. The all-true-box requirement therefore points to the black box, whose statement is true if it holds the gems. In this particular example, the gems are in the black box. This is an illustration of the method, not a universal color answer.

The Shacknews walkthrough reports a wind-up key on a nearby table that opens the chosen box; the reward in its example is gems. The walkthrough also notes that returning to the Parlor changes the clue configuration and makes the puzzle harder. Use the statements currently displayed rather than carrying the example’s black-box answer into another visit.
