Free Oskar there and the quest can resume in Act Three at Lady Jannath’s Estate. In Baldur’s Gate, investigate the haunted atelier, obtain the Torch of Revocation from Mystic Carrion, and use it on the possessed portrait to release Kerri Evenfield. Your choices in the final confrontation shape Oskar’s fate and marriage.
Spoilers: This walkthrough covers events and outcomes in Acts One and Three.
Act One: Find and free Oskar
Find the Zhentarim hideout associated with the barn west of Waukeen’s Rest. Access may depend on your earlier interactions with the Zhentarim; the password given by the quest reference is “Little serpent, long shadow.” Once inside, Oskar is being held by Brem. You can speak with either man first.
There are three broad ways to free Oskar: pay Brem, convince him to release the artist, or fight the Zhentarim. PC Gamer’s 2023 walkthrough reports a 1,000-gold purchase price, a DC 20 Persuasion or Intimidation check for a free release, and a DC 15 check to lower the price to 600 gold. Those are older walkthrough figures and may not describe every current game version.

After you free him, Oskar may ask for another 200 gold for his journey. That payment is optional: he can still appear in Act Three and continue the quest without it.
Act Three: Reach Lady Jannath’s Estate
If Oskar was freed, find him at Lady Jannath’s Estate in the Lower City. The house is haunted: objects float and poltergeists attack as you move through it. Knocking Oskar out during the initial encounter is reported to end that poltergeist fight immediately; killing him can prematurely end the quest. See Invisibility and other spells or tactics may help with the encounter.

Afterward, Lady Jannath asks you to investigate Oskar’s atelier. On the way upstairs, watch for cursed skulls. In the atelier, take Oskar’s portrait and combine it with the empty easel to reveal a concealed section. Search the locked chest inside for a letter addressed to Oskar from Mystic Carrion.
Get the Torch of Revocation from Mystic Carrion
The letter points to Philgrave’s Mansion. Ask Mystic Carrion about Oskar: he offers to sell the Torch of Revocation for 3,000 gold, or to waive the payment if you help him find his missing servant, Thrumbo. If you kill Carrion, the Torch is reported to be in a gilded chest behind his original location.

Take the Torch back to the atelier and equip it. Use it on the possessed portrait to release Kerri Evenfield. If the Torch is in your off-hand, the reported method is to use an off-hand melee attack.
Choose how to resolve Kerri’s confrontation
Kerri confronts Oskar after she is released. You can try to persuade or intimidate her to stop, or fight her. The outcome affects Oskar, his marriage to Lady Jannath, and the quest reward. The quest reference lists a personal portrait and items associated with the Kerri encounter among the rewards. If you save both Oskar and his marriage, he offers to paint a personal portrait.

Routes and practical considerations
| Choice | Cost or requirement | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Buy Oskar from Brem | PC Gamer’s 2023 walkthrough reports 1,000 gold, or 600 gold after a successful DC 15 check. | Frees Oskar without fighting the Zhentarim; the quoted figures are from an older guide. |
| Persuade or intimidate Brem | PC Gamer’s 2023 walkthrough reports a DC 20 check. | Can free Oskar without paying Brem. |
| Fight the Zhentarim | Combat. | Frees Oskar by force. |
| Pay Mystic Carrion for the Torch | 3,000 gold, as listed by bg3.wiki, retrieved in 2026. | Obtains the required Torch without undertaking Carrion’s request. |
| Help Carrion find Thrumbo | Complete Carrion’s request. | Waives the Torch’s stated fee. |
| Kill Carrion | Combat. | The Torch is reported in a gilded chest behind his original location. |
The extra 200 gold Oskar requests after his release is not required for the Act Three continuation. Decide how you want to handle Kerri based on the outcome you want for Oskar and his marriage; the available evidence does not establish a single best ending for every player.
Documented quest bugs
The quest reference records bugs involving poltergeist behavior and portrait outcomes, including a portrait issue from before Patch 7. PC Gamer’s 2023 guide also described the quest as buggy at launch. These reports do not establish that the same problems persist on every current platform or game version. Saving before consequential encounters or rewards is a sensible precaution.
