There is no evidence-backed universal top 20 for early-game weapons in Baldur’s Gate 3: the strongest choice depends on proficiency, build, party, and how far you are willing to explore. The standout options below are ranked as practical picks for distinct roles, weighing their combat impact, flexibility, availability, and acquisition effort—not as a definitive damage contest. “Early game” here includes the Nautiloid Prologue and Act One, including the Underdark; that is broader than the opening surface area.
How to choose an early-game weapon
A weapon’s value is more than its damage die. Check whether your character is proficient with it, whether its effect suits your ability scores or combat plan, and whether it helps the party rather than only its wielder. Access also matters: an item found on the opening ship is available much earlier than one tucked into the Underdark or a guarded hideout.
The order below is an editorial shortlist of verified candidates, not a claim that these are the only strong Act One weapons or that all twenty slots can be ranked from established item data. The cited guides are community-maintained or editorial sources, not official game documentation; mechanics and routes can change, so check them in your current game version.
Best early-game weapon picks, ranked by role
1. Everburn Blade — early two-handed damage
Commander Zhalk carries the Everburn Blade at the Nautiloid helm during the Prologue. The item guide lists an additional 1d4 fire damage, making it an unusually early prize for a character who can use greatswords. It is a two-handed weapon, so it is not a fit for every build, and obtaining it means dealing with the Prologue encounter rather than simply finding it in a later area. 2. Phalar Aluve — party-wide tactical value
This rare +1 longsword offers a choice between two modes: Sing benefits nearby allies’ attack rolls, while Shriek affects nearby enemies’ damage rolls. That makes it a party-utility pick, not just a personal damage upgrade. It is embedded in stone in the Underdark, so it arrives later than the Everburn Blade and requires reaching that area and passing the retrieval check described by the item guide. 3. Titanstring Bow — for Strength-based ranged damage
Titanstring Bow adds its wielder’s Strength modifier to weapon damage, so its advantage depends on the wielder’s ability scores. It is sold by Brem in the Zhentarim Hideout. This makes it a specialized choice for a Strength-oriented ranged setup rather than an automatic best-in-slot bow for every archer. Mobalytics weapon guide.

4. Knife of the Undermountain King — critical-hit and low-roll support
This knife lowers the critical-hit threshold by one, rerolls damage rolls of 2 or less, and grants advantage against lightly or heavily obscured targets when attacking with the blade. Those properties suit a finesse or critical-focused approach, especially when the fight involves obscured targets. The location is not established in the item details cited here, so this entry is about its combat role rather than a verified acquisition route. BG3 Wiki item entry.
5. Shortsword of First Blood — conditional opening hit
The Shortsword of First Blood deals an extra 1d8 piercing damage against targets at full hit points, according to the Act One item catalog. It is found on an executed Deep Gnome in the Underdark. Its bonus is conditional: it is most relevant on an opening strike against an untouched enemy, not as a general damage increase throughout a fight. BG3 Wiki weapon catalog.

6. Sorrow — bonus-action utility
Sorrow is listed at the Wolf altar in the Emerald Grove Hidden Vault, and its Sorrowful Lash is a bonus-action cantrip. That gives it a potential utility angle beyond a weapon’s ordinary attack. The catalog listing alone does not establish the vault’s access requirements or prove how it compares with other Act One weapons, so treat it as a candidate to investigate rather than a universal recommendation. - Two-handed melee character: Consider the Everburn Blade if you can use greatswords and want an early weapon with added fire damage.
- Party that benefits from coordinated combat: Phalar Aluve’s Sing and Shriek modes make it notable for effects that reach nearby allies or enemies.
- Ranged character with high Strength: Titanstring Bow is worth considering because its damage effect uses the wielder’s Strength modifier.
- Finesse or critical-focused attacker: Knife of the Undermountain King’s lowered critical threshold and low-roll reroll are the relevant properties.
- Character seeking an opening-hit bonus: Shortsword of First Blood’s extra damage applies only while the target is at full hit points.
Proficiency and encounter context can outweigh a weapon’s headline effect. A character who cannot use a weapon effectively, or a fight where its conditional bonus does not apply, may be better served by another option.

Why this is not a definitive top 20
The available item references support the mechanics and locations described above, but they do not establish a reliable twenty-place ranking across every build, difficulty, and play style. The Act One catalog includes more weapons, but appearing in a catalog does not prove an item deserves a universal top-20 slot. A complete numbered list would require verified item-level comparisons beyond the candidates whose details are established here.
