Braid: Anniversary Edition is the fullest version of Jonathan Blow’s landmark puzzle-platformer: it pairs a painstaking high-resolution repaint and reworked audio with an in-game presentation toggle, a large creator-commentary suite, and new and redesigned puzzles. The additions make it worthwhile for returning players who want to see how the game was made, while newcomers get the most complete package—though the original’s core challenge remains the main attraction.
What is new in Braid: Anniversary Edition?
Released in 2024, Braid: Anniversary Edition revisits the original game with four substantial additions: rebuilt visuals, revised sound, new or redesigned puzzles, and extensive commentary from the people who made it. It is both a refreshed presentation of a familiar game and an opportunity to explore its creative process. Steam’s listing dates it to May 14, 2024, as does Nintendo’s Switch listing.
How much better is the new art?
The new art is not simply an upscale of the original. The developer says the archived artwork was not designed to look sharp at 4K, so the Anniversary Edition repaints it at high resolution. That gives the game’s painterly environments a cleaner presentation on modern displays while preserving their distinctive style. The original look remains available, making the comparison part of the game rather than a matter of memory. The official site says players can switch presentations at any time; PlayStation’s listing describes toggling between the new and original graphics and sound.
What changed in the audio?
The soundtrack receives revised mixes, and the sound effects have been reworked rather than merely carried over. PlayStation credits Martin Stig Andersen and Hans Christian Kock for the updated effects. The ability to switch back to the original presentation also lets players hear the changes in context. The available platform descriptions establish that the audio was revised, but do not provide a basis for claiming one platform sounds or performs better than another.

Do the new puzzles make it worth replaying?
Yes, especially if you remember the original well. The Anniversary Edition adds a new world and new puzzles, and it redesigns some classic puzzles. Nintendo’s listing highlights both the new world and redesigned challenges; PlayStation also confirms new puzzles for the edition. Nintendo and PlayStation describe these additions, but the storefront descriptions do not specify a puzzle count. The important point is that this is more than a visual refresh: there is fresh material for players who already know the original game.
What does the commentary add?
The commentary is a major reason this edition stands apart from a conventional remaster. The official listings name creator Jonathan Blow, artist David Hellman, and other members of the team among the contributors. Their commentary offers process and design context, not a final or objective explanation of every possible interpretation of the game.

The published runtime differs by storefront: Steam says over 15 hours, while Nintendo and PlayStation each say over 12 hours. Nintendo Life’s Switch review describes commentary organized around design, programming, visuals, sound and music, and playthrough, with material surfaced through an in-game hub and examples tied to parts of levels. That structure makes the commentary feel connected to the game’s details rather than like a separate documentary track.
Which platform is best?
Braid: Anniversary Edition is listed for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox. The official platform pages establish availability, but they do not provide a like-for-like performance comparison, so there is no evidence here to recommend one version for frame rate, resolution, or loading. Choose based on where you want to play and check the listing for your region and hardware for current price and availability.

For newcomers, this is the version to choose: it includes the original game’s puzzle-platforming alongside improved presentation, extra puzzles, and an unusually substantial creator commentary suite. For returning players, the case depends on what you want from a replay. The repaint and audio revisions make the old work newly legible, the toggle offers a direct comparison, and the additions give both puzzle fans and students of game design something new to explore. If you only want the original challenge and have no interest in commentary or presentation changes, the Anniversary Edition’s main value will be the new puzzle material.
