What the 18-million sales figure means
GameSpot reported the 18-million figure in September 2024, citing a Bloomberg interview with Daniel Wu, co-founder of Hero Games, an investor in developer Game Science. Guinness World Records separately records that the game reached 18 million copies by the end of its second week, attributing the milestone to Game Science. This is a historical sales milestone, not a current lifetime total.

The two figures describe different points in the launch period; neither establishes the game’s present total. What is known about the expansion
GameSpot’s 2024 account of Bloomberg’s interview reported that an expansion was in the works. That supports saying an expansion was reported to be in development in 2024; it does not establish a launch date or current release window. Game Science’s official FAQ says the company may release DLC in the future, using conditional language. Its official news archive does not announce a Wukong expansion date.

Game Science describes Black Myth: Wukong as a single-player action RPG rooted in Chinese mythology. The studio’s FAQ describes the game as a one-time purchase and says: “In the future, we may release DLCs and NON-PAY-TO-WIN in-game purchases.” This is a statement of possibility, not confirmation of a dated expansion or a final plan for its contents.
Platforms and release dates
Game Science lists the original release on PS5, Steam, Epic Games Store, and WeGame as August 20, 2024, and the Xbox Series X|S release as August 20, 2025. These dates are platform-specific; check the relevant storefront for current availability and edition details. Game Science’s company page lists the platforms and dates.

What the launch-era physical-edition note says
In its pre-order FAQ, Game Science said physical editions were being produced, but explained that launch physical editions used activation codes because the company faced distribution limitations for discs. That explanation is specific to the launch period and should not be taken as a description of every physical edition currently sold. Check the listing for the platform and region you intend to buy.
