Black Myth: Wukong’s early one-million-player milestone referred to people playing simultaneously on Steam—not one million copies sold or a count of every person who had ever played. The game later recorded larger Steam concurrency and a separate cross-platform sales milestone in August 2024.
What did the one-million figure measure?
It was a Steam concurrent-player count: the number of players online at the same time, rather than total sales or all-time unique players. Noisy Pixel, citing Steam Database, reported an approximate Steam peak of 1,227,000 on August 19, 2024: Noisy Pixel’s report.
PCGamesN reported that the game passed one million Steam players within an hour of launch. In an update dated August 20, the outlet said Steam concurrency had climbed above 2.1 million: PCGamesN’s launch coverage. These are dated snapshots, not current player counts.
How do the reported milestones compare?
| Reported measure | Figure | Scope and date | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Concurrent players | Approximately 1,227,000 | Steam peak reported August 19, 2024 | Noisy Pixel, citing Steam Database |
| Concurrent players | More than 2.1 million | Steam; PCGamesN update dated August 20, 2024 | PCGamesN |
| Copies sold | 10 million | All platforms, as of 21:00 Beijing time on August 23, 2024 | Noisy Pixel reproducing Game Science’s announcement |
| Concurrent players | Three million | All platforms, as of 21:00 Beijing time on August 23, 2024 | Noisy Pixel reproducing Game Science’s announcement |
Why are the numbers different?
They track different things and cover different platform scopes. The first two figures are Steam concurrency reports from different dates; Game Science’s August 23 statement reported both copies sold and concurrent players across platforms. A sale counts a copy, while concurrency counts people playing at one moment. Neither measure can be substituted for the other.
